has any one made or seen a homemade backhoe or excavator operated by linear actuators

No, linear actuators are typically VERY slow. And to get some that would handle the stress would be also be VERY pricey.

I've seen front end loaders for small lawn tractors with linear actuators for sale on the web but not a bh. A 400# actuator uses about 10 amps to move at full load at around 1/4-2/3" per second(sloooow) and have about a 20% duty cycle. Thats 2 minutes of operation and 8 minutes to cool down. Probably be fun to build and operate in a sandbox but not for real work.
