just a suggestion. instead of a car starter, try one of Harbor Freights' 1500 pound winches. replace the spool and cable with a pulley to drive a v-belt attached to a pulley on your conveyor. the speed is already reduced and it comes with a switch and is reversible. i've seen them on sale for as low as $40. i have several i've used for various projects.

Thanks for jogging my memory! 
I have a winch mounted on the front of my Yahmaha Big Bear atv that I no longer use. I'll begin daydreaming about how to turn that and some scrap steel into another labor saving device. It already has the reversing switch. As always, the Scotch-Irish blood in me crys out to "use something you already have and hold on to the cash as long as possible."
I love to split wood but lifting and wrestling 100-125 lb. chunks of wood is no real play party - not at 64 anyhoo!
