Anyone bored enough to read my posts will know i recently acquired a once-used Woods BH6000 backhoe. It was a sub-frame mount hoe, which came new on a NH TZ25. I'm building a sub-frame to attach this to my trusty ole Yanmar YM186D. First thing i had to do was get two new hydraulic lines made so that i would be able to power the hoe. Since i couldn't find one of the ninety degree fittings i needed locally, off to the Parker Store 40 miles away. I don't relish the drive there.... but every time i've had a problem finding something loacally, the Parker Store has a bin full of them on the shelf. A hundred and forty dollars later, my hoe moves under my tractors power !

This where i'll start. Since i can no longer use the belly mower that came with my tractor (since i installed a FEL), i'll use the mounts from the belly mower... modify and reinforce them for their new duty.

I went to the local welding shop and bought some four inch channel for the sub-frame. Knowing i'll need a bunch of tabs, i had them cut some flat stock and punch holes where required. Though this might be cheating.... i have no large drill press (yet), and no milling machine.... and figured this would save me hours. The shop has a huge-mungous shear/punch, that makes me hide my fingers in my pockets every time it makes a stroke.

I've made a pair of plates out of 3/8s...... same thickness as Woods uses. I used four one inch grade five bolts for the mounting pins. I've shouldered all of them front and back with oversized washers for extra support. Keeping the backhoe mounted to the subframe on four pins will (at least in theory) keep the break-out force the same on my tractor, as it was designed into the New Holland it was originally made for.

I'm connecting the front of my subframe to my loader sub-frame. There is a crossmember under the front of the bellhousing, and it ties into the rear of the motor, as well as the bellhousing. The loader came with a pair of plates that go forward from the rear of the motor, to the front bumber/weight bracket.... doubling the front sub-frame of the tractor. Pinning my backhoe subframe here not only ties the backhoe to the motor/bellhousing, but creates a tie in to the front of the tractor too. There are two good sized bosses midway back on the transmission housing that i will also tie into. The MMM also tied in there, making it a no brainer.

These are the brackets i made for the sub-frame to pin into the loader x member

I'm boxing in the channel from behind the rear mounting point, to ahead of the transmission mount. I've welded in a sleeve for the pins to slide through. All mounting pins (six of them) going through the subframe will be common 3/4" hitch pins. The sleeves are something i found in the local Lowes, 3/4 id , 1" od, X 2" long. I used the same sleeves on the brackets for the loader x member.

Of course.... the problem with me making something like this, is that it always LOOKS like i made it. I've spent hours in the past few days welding and grinding.... trying to stay patient. I've got the bulk of the subframe assembled. It will also have a 7/8ths pin coming up through my draw bar mount from the bottom. With any luck this will help align the sub frame whenever i'm attaching it to the tractor.... it is tapered at the end. This is about where i called it a day today. Tomorrow i'm hoping to box in and reinforce the plates that the backhoe mounts to.

Hey Ductape,
That is one sweet hoe you picked up. You are making a great subframe too. It is going to be super good with all the connecting points you are making.
Great project man.

Well, i spent most of my weekend working on my subframe. I went back to the local welding shop with some diagrams on paper. They cut out a bunch of gussets out of 3/8ths plate with their hydraulic shear.

Did lots of welding today. My trusty Miller 175 has served me well. This is the welder i bought used from MadReferee. I like to think he is looking over my shoulder on this one !!! Buying a decent used welder should be considered by anyone on a budget. My subframe is now nearly too heavy for me to lift by myself. It must be almost done ! Welded in all the gussets i had made yesterday. Was about an hour from being done....... ran out of wire for the mig !!! Rat farts !!! Where am i gonna get wire on a Sunday??? Off to Lowes i go. Unfortunately, they only have the small spools, for the 110 welders. I had to manually roll it onto my empty spool from the new spool. OK.... more welding. Bought a couple flapper discs while i was at Lowes also. Flapper discs are my new best friend !! Cleaned up everything i could get at with the flapper.

Though its not completely done, its done enough for some light digging. I'll make my X member at the transmission later this week. Since it looks like it may rain, i'd better get a little protection on it. Some primer and a couple coats of black paint from a spray-bomb oughtta do it.

And i responded,"Cuz i can !"

Great explanation and picture info of the install. Good job. This is the kind of stuff I like to see on TBN. Buy something and make it work.

Great job Scott,
I'm particularly impressed with the robust structure of your subframe. It looks strong and well made.
Oh, and your welds look excellent too.

You have done a great job on your subframe, I got to tell ya though ya didn't have to unspool the 2lb spool for your MM175, ya just had to remove the adapter for the 11lb spools and slide the 2lb spool on and feed your wire as normal:)

Scott,
I think that your subframe looks great. Very strong and capable. You will be able to throw the whole tractor around and not worry 'bout breaking the mount. Looks good from here.

Rob, Thanks, but of course i didn't take any close-ups of the welds that looked like bird turds !!! I do need to pick up a spray, or something to keep the spatter from sticking all over the place. I have learned to clean everything a little better...... this was my problem with welds that didn't look as purty. Also.... my auto darkening mask is just too dark, even when set on 9. This was actually my biggest problem welding. I even tried shining a 500 watt worklight where i was welding to no avail. Its not a real cheapo, but maybe i shoulda spent another hundred bucks when i bought it?

wushaw.... i actually realized this as i was spinning the wire from one spool to the other. I'll be buying another full sized spool this week, so it was no big deal.

I need to come up with an affordable solution to my need for a seat that slides back and forth AND spins around. I stopped at the local Kubota dealer to see how the seats work on the new BXs.... I had barely tilted the seat up when a shark (A.K.A. salesman) was on me like stink on poop, telling me how affordable, versatile, blah, blah, blah !!! Why do i have such a dislike for salesmen??? Anyway.... if anyone in tractorland has swapped out their seat for one that slides-n-spins.... i'm all ears ! I will not offer up any photographic evidence of my seat modification, its some of the cheesiest work i've ever done. But.... it did allow me to get a couple hours of seat time in today !

Re: seat solution. Do you have enough room to add a seat for the bh? From the photos it looks like you have a long reach from the seat to the controls (hard to tell from a picture, or maybe you are 6'10"). My TYM has the two seat system and I like it over the Kubota single seat system such as the B21 types.

Would you mind taking a pic (or 2) of this? I may try to do something like that for the FEL I'm adding.
