Looking
I'm designing a dolly for a backhoe on a new B2650. I've seen enough videos/photos to understand the basic design but here's my question: how high should the rear of the dolly be compared to the bottom of the backhoe as it sits on the tractor? Should the dolly just sneak under the backhoe with as little clearance as possible, or doesn't it matter? How much clearance would be too much clearance? Does it make much difference whether it's 1/2" or 2", for example? Thanks.

I built a dolly out of wood for my backhoe and I don't think it really matters because you use the stabilizers to move the unit into position. You could have the hoe removed from the tractor by all physical connection except hydo lines and put it on anything with the controls.

Here's what I use. I had the backhoe off this past weekend to aerate the yard.
I have the wood about 1/2" below the bottom of the frame. Just so you can wheel it under.
There's a narrow piece that's within the outriggers that's up close to the underside of the backhoe. It's a little hard to see it in that picture. I don't use my stabilizers at all to take it off or put it back on.
All the wheels swivel so it's easy to move it around in any direction you want.

I use a pallet with wheels on it. I can drag it where I want or use the 3pt pallet forks to move it around.

BigBoyToys: Based on how it comes on/off the dolly, would you say it would be ok to have a bigger gap than 1/2"? Based on which casters I use, I may have as much as 2" clearance.

That must make it a whole lot easier when it comes time to remount the hoe too. I'm getting ready make something up for mine but don't have a hard pad to use, just gravel. Maybe it would be worthwhile to put some pavers down.

With the gap kept small it allows me to keep the footprint of the dolly tighter. The casters you use really shouldn't make a difference. I just added "height" with wood added on top of the dolly under the hoe. The guy I bought the tractor from gave me the two dollies in the picture. I just used a 2x6 to join them and then added a couple 2x8 pieces and a piece of 3/4" plywood to get the the spacing under the backhoe where I wanted it. I'll take a couple pictures of the dolly this weekend and post them.

You should be OK with a 2" gap. You might have to use the outriggers to get the lower pins up high enough to pull the hoe away from the tractor. Again I don't see why you couldn't make the spacing whatever you want it to be.

A piece of 3/4" piece of plywood on the gravel would work and allow you to move it around to remount it. You'll be able to get the tractor close enough that you only need to move the hoe a few inches. The pad in the picture is for a building I'm putting up. It will give me a dedicated place for the tractor and other toys. It will free up some space...which you never have enough of!!!

Good idea.
