Kubota B7800 with FEL
My true blue B7800 is due for a valve adjustment at 800 hours. Today it turned over 795 hours. I'm trying to decide if I should haul it to a dealer or buy the manual and do the valve adjustment myself. I have done all the other maintenance for the past 795 hours. I have done valve adjustments on many types of motors in the past. I do have a trailer and can haul the tractor in for this service. What is better? Haul the tractor in and pay the dealer for the valve adjustment or buy the manual and do it myself?

Valve adjusting is Easy...
With the money you will save doing it yourself, you can buy a nice set if long feeler gauges & have a Lot left over... Plus you will know it is done right & back together.

I have the proper tools (maybe) but not the information. I can't go out tomorrow morning, yank off the valve cover, and have a clue where to start. With other motors I could go online and find the proper method of valve adjustment. Not so with the B7800.

I am not familiar with your specific tractor but I will render an opinion anyway. If you feel mechanically capable, by all means get the book and do it yourself. It would be nice to get a response from a TBN user who has done it on the specific engine and knows of some unknown, but having done the valve adjust on larger and more complex valve trains I think this should be easy and you will feel better having done it and spent extra time that a typical mechanic might not. Getting to know your machine will make it easier for you to accept the challenge to dig in when something more challenging comes up. It builds your comfort level. And pay no attention to the axiom I tell people that knowledge is measured by the value of equipment destroyed and I am very knowledgeable.

Adjusting them is easy, but you need to get the recipe for which valves to adjust when the Top Dead Center mark appears in the inspection window, which is probably on your clutch housing. The instructions are only one page in the shop manual for my engine, if you can find someone that has a B7800 manual they could scan it and send it to you. For the money you'll save doing it yourself you can probably buy a service manual.

I did my BX24...simple. Ordered a valve cover gasket, but don't know if it was necessary. Mine was a NICE rubber gasket that was still very supple.
Do it yourself and save the money!!
The money you save will more than cover the shop manual!!

Thanks for posting the sheet, orezok. I must say, that after reading it three (3) times I still don't know what supposed to happen. It does not sound complicated, but I never did anything like this on a diesel. I find the explanation on there inadequate, simply because there are no numbers marking what parts the instruction refers to. Even if I'm mechanically inclined I would need to learn how to do this before following the instructions for this particular Kubota engine. In other words if the manual refers to a thingamabob, but I don't know what that is I can't work on it no matter how simple sad work may be. May be it's just me.

ps: my B7800 is only around the 600hrs mark at this point but I would like to be able to do stuff like that on it.

I find the explanation on there inadequate, simply because there are no numbers marking what parts the instruction refers to.

The relationship between the numbers and parts is listed at the very bottom of the page, below the table. Those numbers also happen to correspond to the number of the instruction describing what to do.
