B7800 low hydraulic/transmission fluid

   / B7800 low hydraulic/transmission fluid #11
When I first got my M7040 I had done a routine check on the transmission/hydraulic fluid after a few hours of use. It wouldn't register on the dipstick. That freaked me out. But I didn't notice any performance issues. I had to put in about a gallon to get it to "normal" level!! But to put it in perspective that's only a fraction of the total fluid in the M7040. Anyway, I found a very minimal leak at one of the hoses going to the loader. Didn't really even see many drops of fluid on the floor under it. It was mainly just a little "wet" from hydraulic fluid on the hose connection. I tightened it up and haven't had a single problem. Haven't had to put in a single drop of fluid. It's always within the normal range on the dipstick now. BTW, a metal dipstick doesn't help much with visualization either. Mine is metal and it's almost impossible to see the fluid level on the dipstick.

Your right on not being able to see the oil on the dipstick....I have a little trick that i found works pretty well...cut a very small piece of paper towel..when you pull the dipstick..lay the paper town on it....then you can turn the stick sideways and kind of line up the highest mark on the paper towel to the metal on the dipstick to see where it is at.

On my B7800, when I first pull out the dipstick it is always dry all the way to the bottom. I then put it in and pull it out and it shows the level where it should be. My best guess is that the dipstick is in a tube that drains when the tractor runs, and has an airtight seal that prevents the fluid from rising up to the proper level until the seal is broken by pulling the dipstick out.

The hyd fluid sump in the tractor is vented so removing the dipstick will
not affect the level. Some tractors (e.g. Kioti) vent the sump thru the
dipstick hole itself. The hyd fuid level rises very rapidly when the tractor is
shut off and it is VERY sensitive to the tractor being out of level.

The B7800HST calls for Super UDT, which is prob over $15/gallon now, but
you have to keep a supply around in case of a sudden leak. Chevron
has a great fluid (THF 1000) which is colored and MUCH easier to see on
the dipstick.
