I used gear oil, 90W.
When I topped mine up, the first thing I found out was that it leaked. Fortunately seals are not very expensive.

Use SAE80 or SAE90 gear oil in the steering box and front axle gear / differential cases.

Thanks, I'm still waiting on a service manual. If I had to guess I would have said 80-90 weight oil. I haven't checked it yet but I'm guessing with a 22 year old tractor its probably low ( or empty)

You might want to pop it open and inspect the thrust bearings... gets expensive when they fail and take the worm gear assembly with them. The bearings are $6 each and you need two.. the work gear assembly is about $150.

Thanks Charles. I think I'd better check that.

I re-lubed my steering box today, perhaps should take this advice also. I see in the manual that somebody replaced these thrust bearing earlier; they'd circled the part on the exploded drawing anyways. Will check this soon. Thanks. Tim

Move your steering lock-to-lock and watch the steering wheel from the side (easy if you lift the front with the loader). If it moves up much/at all they may need to be replaced.
