The exhaust valve on number 2 cylinder broke and is now part of the piston.

I have had this tractor for about 2 years and only use it for mowing. It is a B7100 HST - D with a D750 - AH engine. It is the newer style HST and I believe it was made in the mid 80s. I am not sure how many hours are on it. The tractor ran great until the valve broke.

I have purchased a zero turn lawn mower and would like to get my B7100 to run in order to sell it.

At a minimum I will need to replace the piston and re-work the head. The machine shop wants $300 to just inspect the head.

What is the best way forward?
It does not look like I can get the pan off without separating the engine from the transmission. Does anyone have experience with this?
Anybody had any experience going through a B7100 engine?
How hard is it to find a used engine that would fit my tractor?

Any help would be appreciated.

Get the head re-worked and replace the piston, put it back together, get her running and sell it. It would be cheaper than getting another motor for it.

Just try to figure out an estimated cost and see what kind of money you can get for this tractor. A lot of this will depend on how much of the work you can do yourself.
It may not be worth putting too much into it. Selling it as is or parting it out might be a better option.
$300 just to inspect the head is a bit salty. I do suggest you get other estimates.

$300 is insane... heck you've already removed the head and would be bringing it to them. Not to mention, it's about as basic a head can get.
I agree with what Roy said as far as considering how much you should put into it.

If there is only a hole in the piston then weld it shut... If you see no head damage then buy a new valve and head gasket and put it back together...
