I filled out the form on Kubota's website to see if my tractor is eligible for the reduced price ROPS kit. Then they had an option to select a dealer and get a price quote.

I already knew that the ROPS kit would be $148, but WOW! When I got the quote, they included $90 shipping, tax and $120 installation. If I don't have them install it, the liability is voided.

I really could care less about liability, I'm only interested in the safety aspect of it. I've never, ever, ever paid a dealership for shipping, that's really what my gripe is. I think I'll get busy calling other dealers to see if this shipping is across the board or what.

I mean, c'mon, they have parts coming from Kubota all the time, right?

As a point of comparison, I could probably have the local race shop build me a complete cage for that price! (Step back down off those soapboxes, safety police, you know what I meant.)

Here's my poor man's plea: Does anyone have or know someone who has a 90's vintage B7100 that they are parting out and might be willing to sell me the ROPS bar and seatbelt? Or has your ROPS been sitting in the corner of the shop since your tractor was new? Don't worry, you can PM me and I won't tell anyone!;)

Spring's right around the corner, and I'm crazy to get started!

New York has a ROPS retrofit program with rebates of up 70% of the cost. I'm not sure if there is something similar in your state. If there is, it may be cheaper going that route than through Kubota.

Evil,

While you may not believe it, you are buying the ROPS at Kubota's cost. It is a small price to pay for your safety and possibly, your life.

As for a locally fabricated ROPS, I am sure you could get one built but when the tractor rolls over and your widow goes back against them, they will not be happy. Nor will it be a certified ROPS as that is where the cost really is.

The ROPS you get from Kubota is certified - tested and approved by OSHA so in the event of rollover, it will protect you.

Possibly Western Kentucky Tractor Parts would have a used ROPS that would cost you less in the long run.

Good luck!

I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for you. Let me clarify, I'm looking for ROPS also. International 784 tractor. Visited my local dealer, started looking up pricing and when parts started getting near $3000  we quit looking. The best aftermarket pricing I have found is almost $1000 plus shipping from Cali. to TX so your $358 INSTALLED is making me jealous.:D

BTW, if anyone has a ROPS for an International 784, let me know please.

.

Jim,

I got told $90 for shipping a year ago fr my local dealer. However, my prob is, the $148 version won't fit my tractor due to the BH. I got told two different p/n's by the dealer and Kubota both of which cost considerably more. They also told me it's OK if I install it myself.

So they want to whack me w $90 for a ROPS that might fit. And if it doesn't, I'm out $90; and who knows if they won't want another $90 for a "restocking charge"!

So I'm going without for now.............

How on earth did you interpret all that from what I posted? NY has a ROPS rebate program. I don't know where the ROPS hardware comes from or any of the other details. You know that the equipment involved in this program is not OSHA approved? Whatever.

EtW,

I'm pretty sure that Yankee Clipper was responding to me there. I knew someone would misinterpret my post. He was probably so excited for the opportunity to preach that he clicked the nearest reply button without noticing who's post it was referring to.

To Yankee Clipper, et al:

Again, I am concerned with safety here. Why do you think I am looking for a ROPS?
Please read my post again, as you must have missed that part.

----------

Back to your true post Evil the Weasel, thanks for the helpful info about the NY state program. I'm searching to see if Ohio has the same type of rebate deal. Your response was exactly what I was hoping for when I started the thread.

Thanks Bignoles, I feel your pain. Puts my prices a bit more into perspective.

Here's hoping we both find what we're looking for!

Thanks for the lead, I've sent them a parts inquiry.

So if I understand correctly they will sell it without the $120 installation charge for DIY? $238 sounds pretty reasonable to me...you do know ROPS tubing isn't just plain ole steel tubing? It is a higher strength alloy.

Sounds fair to me. Whats a life worth?

My roll bar (for a B7100) showed up in a crate size that took up most of a six foot pickup bed. I was a little surprised that the freight charge was only $90 for a trip clear across the USA.

The other thing to consider is how much a third party roll bar would cost. After checking a couple of other brands on the web, Kubota's deal looked pretty good.

Thanks Ron, and everyone else, too. I'm convinced that I overreacted about the price. Call it sticker shock? You're right about the aftermarket ones, holy moley!

When I told my wife how much it would be, she really didn't put up a fuss so I guess I have my answer!

I'll be giving the dealer a call this week.

Thanks,
Jim

I've been thinking about adding one to my B6100. The complaint I have is it does not fold which means it will not fit under certain things. :(

Oh, come on! Where does all this come from?

IMHO, this is just so over rated. A good shop can build a good roll bar. Look at all the Jeeps out there. Land Cruisers. Race cars. Sprint cars.

It is certainly nice to have a bolt on piece to just put on the tractor. But a good fab shop could do a very good job too.

I guess you should not haul your tractor on that trailer that just had the tiedowns welded on? You can't hook your four chains and binders to those tiedowns; they might break; they're not factory.

Oh man, I think I just saw the ROPS police fly by in the black helicopter. Good thing my old Kubota has a stock ROPS. Hope they never find my old Jeep with the fabricated roll cage though...

Wait, they are circling; I think they saw my top-n-tilt on the 3pt that was not factory certified welded... :D

I do agree, if there is a quality factory part easily available, then it is worthwhile to pursue that. And, I have a wife and kid; it is worth not only protecting yourself, but protecting them too.

I grew up in Jeeps though. There was no roll bar or cage for a '42 Ford GPW(Ford war production "Willy's MB/GP"). For the later CJ5, there was only a basic roll bar; we had to add the cage kit.

The same with race cars. If we were not out in the Jeeps, I was helping work on stock cars. Those cages have to hold up to a lot of stress, especially when you wind up in the wall.

Otherwise, most all of the fab shops out there should close their doors.

$238 sounds good to me. even a shop at $50/hour will need to do this in under 3 hours to make it worth it. then add in all of your extra time for figuring measurements, materials, dimensions, paint, and bolting points.

as a program, it might be ordered and shipped separately for some reason hence the cost. or they're just using that as a way around something!

i am totally hi-jacking - but if you have the 60" MMM on this thing i would love to see pictures of the attachment points from the side (bolts, bars, pins, etc), mine is not quite right and i'm not sure why, the manuals are a bit ambiguous.
