B7100 fragile steering boxes

I learned something else from my recent hydraulics adventures:

One of the tractor salvage places I talked to said:

"B7100? Sure I've got at least a dozen of those... Wait, you're not looking for a steering gear box, are you? 'Cause those are all sold already. Hydraulic pump? No problem. Just make sure you take care of your steering box."

Apparently the B7100 (and I assume 6100 and 5100) have a fragile steering box?

It's the first I've heard of it, but if the salvage yard has sold every gearbox, then I guess It must be true.

I freshened the oil in mine.

Kubota has parts to rebuild the steering box.

Mines been rebuilt once. They take a beating if you do a lot of loader work.

Kubota also have new steering boxes.

if i remember it is like 600 for the complete box and 300 for the main gear that braeks inside thats y i did below and love it

On mine the thrust bearings went out and the junk from the top one fell into the little worm gear assembly. I replaced the bearings but the damage was done. Ended up costing me close to $170 for a new shaft assembly (with the block full of bearings that rides the shaft).

When I opened it up it looked like no one had ever changed the fluid. The thrust bearings were about $6 each and you need two. If your steering wheel sticks, pops, or 'moves up' when you turn it go get the bearings.
