Tractor
JD2555 and a few Allis Chalmers and now one Kubota
I have a friend who is going to be selling a 756C New Holland backhoe. I could use a backhoe, and thought about buying it and adapting it to fit my JD2555. However, the 756C is made for a tractor of less than 30 hp, and my 2555 is pushing in excess of twice that.
Just how big a mistake will I be making if I buy it and modify the subframe to fit my tractor? I probably would just build brackets to hang the existing subframe to, rather than messing up the original subframe. I am not going to be digging deep, just mainly stumps and ditches.

Unles your speaking of really small trees, some stumps will put you quite deep. :D Plus cutting roots with a BH can be one of the hardest things you can do with one. Depending on the Tree.

As for if it will work, I have never tried so I won't answer, but I will give you a bump so someone who has done something close may see it. :)

My thoughts would be that going that way would be fine. You may be frustrated by the performance, reach, depth etc. but the backhoe would not damage / overmatch the tractor.

I would not hang too big a hoe off too small a tractor though.

Thanks guys,
I haven't been able to get the seller to return my phone calls, so it may get sold before he gets back to me on it.

I found out today why he has been avoiding my calls more than usual. A trip to the doctor has brought on some terrible news and he is working on dealing with it. I think I need to make a trip south...

I would take ride. He may want to get things in order, and if he is not going to be using it anymore, be there with cash in hand and make that part easier for him. Obviously , if you were looking to buy it prior to this developement, its not like you were looking to take advantage of the situation. I wish him the best.

as an aside, as you will find, digging stumps is the hardest thing a backhoe does, generally...

Please keep us informed on the back hoe status as I have a 1620 and if you don't want to modify it, perhaps you could still find a home for it...

The 6.5-ft hoes are made for smaller tractors because of weight, not power.
Unlike ground-engaging implements, your tractor can not be too big for a
hoe, but a hoe CAN be too big for your tractor!

The only limitation I see is that maybe your tractor could handle a bigger
hoe so you may not be fully utilizing its capabilities. How heavy is the 2555?

Not wanting too much competiton, I didn't mention that the seller had put it on ebay. I am now the proud owner of it, and will be going after it sometime in the near future.
As far as modifying it, I am totally against that. I will do twice the work to keep from welding or modifying it, but hopefully it will be able to fit under my JD2555. The JD2555 is a 70 hp tractor that weighs in just under 7,000 pounds.
Digging stumps and ditches will be it's main use, and I might dig some holes to put up some posts along the roadway that my sister in law owns. The people that are using the road are "widening" it by driving up on the shoulder of the road, and asking them to quit has gone on deaf ears. So I may still some 4' posts in the ground (telephone poles cut to short lengths) along the side of the road so if they want to run down the ditch, it is going to hurt.
I don't expect to need it for very long, as I only have two and a half acres and there aren't that many stumps, and only so many ditches can be dug, lol.
