Yeah, I was mainly kidding about the "tom sawyer" bit, although there's been a few times when SHE suggested we find something to make jobs that need done regularly, easier/quicker to do -

See, if ya throw a few "oh good, that's OUR new xxxx"s in between the "tom sawyer" approaches, ya get no more dirty looks than usual, and TWICE the goodies - :D:D

Also, it doesn't hurt when wifey brings home 4 5 gallon wisteria's in the dead of summer, and says "could we plant these by the posts on the pergola you built?" - so I hop on the ol' 580, drive the 2' bucket into the ground a few times by each of 4 posts, wrestle 4 chunks of "brick" out of the clay (each one just a bit smaller than your washing machine), get 'em into the loader and plant 'em in a junk area of the pasture to "melt in later", dump 3-4 bags of planting mix into each of the holes (along with a wisteria), she waters 'em in, and a couple days later she's going "wow, they didn't even wilt", etc...

Wasn't long after that I was told that the only way I should ever sell the backhoe is if I could find a good deal on a newer one :licking:

BTW, Rich, been taking lotsa pics of my "three pronged hedge/brush terminator" kit build, just about to start on "phase three", and will start a separate thread when I've got something SERIOUS to show (The Samurai and friends) ... Steve

I don't buy a lot of attachments, but I do have a bad gun addiction. What works for me is my mad money. Remember when you were a kid and went out with your buddies. Your Mamma always told you to hang on to a dime in case you got mad at your buddies and had to call for a ride home. Every month when I cash my check, I put a little back as my mad money. Then when I see a good deal on a gun, I have the cash money to buy it. {It is better to wait until your wife is at work before bringing it in the house} And if I were to die first, think how happy she will be when she opens the gun room door and finds out how large a collection she owns.

The same thing would work with attachments. If she ask, just say I found it at a pawnshop. Cost hardly nothing at all.

Here's someone who didn't buy a Samurai trimmer:

Seems to me it wouldn't take very long to just pushmow it?

i am having trouble seeing the advantage of the double sickle on the Samurai trimmer. It seems to me that you would get better separation with the guards of a standard sickle bar and these guards would also protect the sickle sections. Without the guards there would be two blades moving back and forth but dividing or protection. Seems to me like you could not let it float like a sickle bar either.

Picked up the steel Friday for the pond mower project.

What I've thought up in my head on the design of this had the mounting looking not far off from a CarryAll, so thinking about it more, I decided to just go ahead and build a CarryAll, and then make the pond mower seperate, like a pallet. I'll also make a floor pallet for the CarryAll. My thinking is, I'll just back under which ever one I need to use with the CarryAll, pin it in place and take off with it.

So far I've got the CarryAll all but done. Still gotta build the pond mower and then paint everything. Hope to get it knocked out in the next couple days.

Got the mower "pallet" done last night. Originally I was going to use two square tubes per side to hold the mower and the counter weights, but I am going to try it first with just one and see how it does. I'll add the other if it's not stable enough.

I angled the edges of the CarryAll so I can tilt the hyd toplink and back under the "pallet" like a forklift (that's the idea anyway). The tabs on the front of the "pallet" have 1/2" holes so I can drop a pin through to keep it from wanting to slide off when in use.

I am thinking of adding 2x10's on the headboard of the CarryAll. Then making a "floor pallet" with 2x10's mounted on it. That would allow the CarryAll to be used as a CarryAll, or drop the "floor pallet" and pick up the "mower pallet" when it's grass cutting time. This opens up the ability to make other "pallets" for other uses.....though I can't think of any right off.

I got some "Machinery Grey" paint at Tractor Supply, it's not even a close match to Kubota Gray, but I don't think I want to paint everything I make with that $11 a can Kubota Paint.

Took the mower out for a test run last night. I wanted to see how it would work with just one stick of the square tube instead of two per side. It did fine, so I am going to leave it with just one. It DOES however need counter weight for sure. Also, I found it needs a gage wheel I think - and some skirting around the deck to keep from launching rocks. I hope to finish up tonight and hopefully get paint started. I'll post some more pics tomorrow.

It looks good, and I bet you DO need some skirting like they have on brush hogs, are you thinking rubber flaps or chain? Guage wheels make good sense too, or scalping will be a regular thing.

I did end up finishing the mower and using it serveral times before the grass stopped growing. It worked out good - doing the job it was intended to do, but I found that it was just too long, heavy and clunky to use for what I wanted.

I cut it up this past weekend to use the steel while making a set of brush forks. I have another idea I am going to explore - mounting the mower engine in the center on the quick hitch, replace the mower blade with a pulley, then have an arm that swings to each side and locks in place with a pin. At the end of that arm would be a weedeater head connected to another pulley and belt driven. I could make the arm telescopic to reduce the length when put away between uses.

Maybe a float on either side would let you get all the way to the edge and even weeds in the pond itself? Like the ones in your last two photos.
