Last year I decided to fix a broken patio where the slab had cracked in half. I used the backhoe to dig down at the corners, did a little jacking and added some concrete piers. This year I wanted to cap it with some slate that was given to me. My neighbor, who is a landscaper, was asked by a homeowner to haul off the leftover stone that a pool company had left behind. He didn't feel like unloading it so he gave it to me. I used the forks and tractor to palletize and store it. It's basically about 2 pallets worth.
What I found was that I have three shapes...small squares, rectangles and the rest are large random broken pieces. I had assumed these were used to make an Ashlar pattern around a pool deck and I would do the same on my patio. I googled the Ashlar layout and what I see in the pictures is that the small squares should be the same width as the rectangles. Mine aren't. My squares are 7.75" X 7.75" and the rectangles are 6" X 12". I know with all the members here some of you have experience laying stone. What layout do I use with these size pieces? Am I looking at these google images wrong?

I'm guessing a large square could be cut from the broken pieces but I'm stuck on what to do about the width of the small squares not matching the rectangles.

Heres a couple of links to images that I had looked at. This first link actually looks like the stone I have.

If you need the smaller stones just rent a stone saw, or diamond blade and cut them.
We did layouts like this, when I was doing landscaping, we would put most of the big ones down and then lay in the medium and then the small.
what you could do is paint a square on the ground and mess around with different fits. find one you like.

Do you have to cut them all or can you get away with only cutting a few to fill in the holes?
