Ran across a good article on how to adjust the cutting height on a rotary cutter at LSU Ag Center website

As a novice 'bush hog' user it had some good information for me.

Good write-up, and also what I do to set my rotary cutter.

Left out the part about adjusting so when the rear of the deck raises the rear wheel off the ground, the PTO shaft doesn't contact the leading edge of the deck. Forgetting to do this properly will (could) result in a bent PTO shaft (I think I came close once, but no damage).

beenthere, I did that and was shocked how expensive those PTO shafts are! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I suppose I'm lucky I didn't break anything else!

Only problem I have with the article is the way it specified an arbitary minimum cutting height. The RC doesn't know or care what height it's cutting the grass. You know you are cutting too low not by measuring the grass height, but by excessive scalping and/or the skids dragging the ground. Brush is different. It's good to cut brush pretty high to avoid the fatter part of the trunks right near the ground, and excessive re-grinding.
