Try googling an octopus furnace, which is the more common version.

True hypocausts went out of fashion with the Romans and the abandonment of child (slave) labor to sweep between the support pillars. A version of it was used in traditional Korean homes until fairly recently. Like hydroponic in floor heat, it is very efficient.

We had one of those when I was a kid. It was originally coal-fired, but when we were there it had already been converted to natural gas. That thing could give kids a nightmare! Looked more like an upside down spider.

I'm thinking the glass was marked in gallons. Looks like there would be some guesswork in filling to $1.00 or whatever. Maybe they used a magic marker for the dollar marks. Oh wait, magic markers probably didn't exist.

I remember that $1.00 was the 5 gal mark.

gas was 19.9 cents a gallon. and motor oil could be bought at the service stations from the racks of glass bottles with the spouts on. (The service station guy ALWAYS asked to check your oil!)

I got rid of Sirius in a large part because they talk too much. SOP seems to be to play 2 songs, then a commercial- Excuse me, promo.
That, and I almost got hit with a late fee because I didn't realize my year's prescription had run out, so didn't bother logging on to check my CC statement because I knew it had a zero balance.

I also have gotten rid of that card because they won't send me paper statements.

I have 4 accounts and get them for $6mo each and they work out nicely in retail businesses so I control the music. The channel I settled on is 17, The bridge, 70's and 80's mellow rock. They do promo once in awhile but not like on 70's and the classic rock channels.
