Are there enough used CUTs out there?

What I see driving the pre owned market presently in little tractors and big ones as well is it a tier 4 unit or not. I know I did a lot of looking to find the pre tier 4 unit I bought this spring and it was 400 miles from here and I went and got it. If it has an ECM and regenerates, I don't want it and I know a lot of owners that feel the same way I do. Just too many issues to deal with.

Pre tier 4 units, both large and small command a premium price today and I don't see that changing much in the near future. It will when manufacturers get the bugs ironed out of the new emissions compliant diesels but not until then.

I don't look at financing or interest rates as they have little impact on what I do or want and interest as well as principal is a tax deduction anyway as we are a farming operation.

What is the grey market? I致e seen it mentioned several times on this site.

My first CUT was a 15hp Shibaura (Shibaura made small Ford/New Hollands for a lot of years). It was a great tractor but differed from its US counterparts in the following ways:
  • No Rollover Protection or Seatbelt
  • No Warning Labels
  • No PTO Override Clutch (I bought one for $30)
  • No Owners Manual
  • Everything Written in Japanese
  • Rice Paddy Tires (Lugs were like 2 1/2" tall)

It was a great little tractor. I worked the heck out of it and later sold it for what I paid for it - $2,500. There is risk with buying a grey market tractor, but often that is the way to get your first CUT at a price you can afford.

Come and buy in Canada - the Canadian Dollar is at about 75 cents US right now, so a $20k Cdn tractor will only cost you $15k US!

I live 20mins from the border and frequent canada a lot. The only way this really works is on used and or if its brought across the border. What Ive found is stuff in canada cost more even after you factor in exchange rates also have to deal with taxes. What are selling like hot cakes though is used cars, didnt know this but canadians lease for like one year and turn them in because of taxes or whatever. Either way you can get 1 year old trucks with 10k miles on it or less that was 55-60k for 35ish

I think the vast majority of new tractor purchases are simply because the buyer wanted new. Then with creative thinking they can work magic on the numbers and justify the purchase over a used one.

I believe this human nature philosophy also holds true for car or truck purchases. It's just who we are.

Yes and no. People do that with houses, cars, trucks all the time, nothing new. I'd conservatively say that 50% of the people out there cant afford what they are buying, and no Im not talking about being able to buy with cash or not.

Where your wrong is the new-used market is garbage in terms of pricing. New-used was so close or even higher than buying new, illogical to buy new-used vs new in most cases that I saw. Im all for buying toys used, boats, sleds, wheelers, but where it doesnt make sense is tractors at least for the time being.

It's just that used recreational stuff has little value. Like they say, a boat owner has two good days, the day he buys it and the day he sells it. Same with RVs, if you ask me. Or time shares!

Tarctors, are "TOOLS'. Even though many are quite limited, but still, No comparison.

Very true, but in the CUT market, I think the area is a little more grey then the farmer or the bigger tractor market. SCUT/CUT market straddles more of the want/toy line then you think. Regardless, made no sense to buy a 3 year old machine that was only 10% cheaper, heck even looked at a one year old tractor where the guy wanted 3k more than it was new.

This website is proof that a very large percentage of CUT/SCUT tractors are bought out of lust not need.

How different the tractor landscape and this site would be if all this stuff had to paid for in CASH! So money that was carefully saved and put away. Not making a judgment (this time), but just saying. So it would be, does Nathan go to College, or do we buy that BX? lol
