As the title asks about new hobbies. I took up building guitars from kits.

Ordered a kit from fretwire that you have to finish and build then wire it up.

Anyone else start a new hobby??

I revived an old "hobby"; bicycle riding. I used to ride years ago and had bought a top of the line bike in 1975, a Raleigh International with Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing and Campagnolo components. I completely tore it down this winter, repacked all bearings, and cleaned it like it had never been cleaned before. I have been out on a rails to trails path a couple times and it feels good.

I also have my other two hobbies, cabinet making and managing my little 8 acre forest. I just retired last August so I am still acclimating to this new life.

Good for you Doug! I maintain our little 5 acre grove and a small 11 acre farm it keeps me busy enough to never get bored..
I make a list of the things I have to do, it helps a lot, and better when I scratch them off!

I started making various knives from scrap steel I have laying around. First few are pretty rough but they are getting better. Got some new equipment coming which should make them lots easier to build and prettier (hopefully). After a few more, I am going to order some special material, maybe 1085W to make them with.

Yes, it is called cleaning out the garage to make space for a CNC plasma table. Anybody who has seen my YouTube videos has noticed the problem.

A few years back, I ordered two ukelele kits from Grizzly. My Grandson and I worked together to build them, and we had a great time; a great bonding experience. We still have them, 20 years later. I have often thought about building a nice acoustic, but don't play much any more. The price is right on those fretwire kits.

My woodworking skills are quite good and I have a lot of machinery and luthier tools, I built a classical guitar some years ago, it was truly a remarkaBLE looking instrument but just dead acoustically, a lot of notes just didn't resonate properly.
I decided then that luthiers are masters of the dark arts along with neuro surgeons, witches etc and now I limit myself to repairs providing they are simple.

I recently bought a lathe and upgraded my jointer so I am getting back into woodworking. Next door neighbor had a Pin Oak taken down on Sunday and I snagged a chunk to try to turn a couple bowls or something. 18in in diameter with some interesting grain/color. Just painted the ends and letting it dry for awhile. It is too heavy to lift onto my bandsaw at the moment.

Nice looking piece, I use parafin wax to seal the ends, also have a small lathe, Record, downside is that it use #1 Morse Taper

Sorry for the weird cut... cut this with my electric Stihl w/14in bar. Messed up a bit but easily fixed. There is another 12ft of this and I would love to plank it but don't have the equipment. That would be another hobby that I don't have time or room for... let alone the money.

As my cousin said he learned "A guitar really needs to be built light, close to the edge of flying apart, to be able to resonate well"
