I have a Sportsmen 700 Polaris. Going down hill the back wheels lock up on my pretty good because of the EBS system. In fact I wished it did free wheel some because the back end, ends up coming around on you and you have to give some gas to straighten it out.

I have tested the Ranger 4x4 and several of the competition. The ranger had them beat in all the areas that I tested. The big thing for me is the speed. I am not a racer but when hauling things down the road I need to get there and at 40 mph compared to the less than 20mph of most of the units it isn't a contest. I understand the new Yamaha Rhino does 30. Haven't tested it.. If the Ranger had a diesel I would have purchased it by now. I am waiting to see the new Ranger camo unit and at some point make a decision. I too have a 4x4 Honda that I pull a trailer behind. It is very nice but I hate to hook the trailer up every time I want to haul stuff which seems to be all the time. I carry beehives around in all areas so a 4x4 is must. I live in an area of plenty of hills.. so I know what you mean about the hills. Let me know what you figure out.

Land Pride does have a new UV available. We just got them in and they are quite nice. Great ride and suspension, lots of power, good clearance and brakes. Also, if you aren't in a big hurry, Kubota will have one out this spring, supposed to be by Feb. Will be diesel with hydrostat tranny, wont see it freewheel down a hill /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great info fellas. Thanks for the input. Our small farm borders my neighbors large dairy and they have a gator 4x2 that I actually bought at an auction for them. Very poor performance when you get it in a ditch or on a steep hill. Engine has been trouble free but it seems like you are never going to get where your going because of lack of power and speed. Maybee something is wrong with this one?? I heard about kubotas but since I do alot of hunting I dont want the diesel---plus I heard is was going to be in the 10k+ RANGE! Again thanks for the input and if anyone else has input please post it. Glenn

Just curious, why wouldn't you want a diesel? Not questioning your judgement, maybe you know something I don't!
I heard a rumor, from a Honda atv salesperson, that Honda was going to come out with their version of a utility atv in the near future. Whether this happens or not remains to be seen. I always thought they were missing out by not having a utility model.

If he's hunting he doesn't want a diesel because of the noise.

I love the diesel but since I enjoy bowhunting I wanted to stay away from the diesel fumes and the "rattle". My dad also uses it for rifle hunting since he cant get around the mountains by foot anymore. Maybee it wouldnt be a problem but here in PA our whitetails snort and run at the first smell of a human. Sure would be nice since i have an off road tank. That was my line of thinking. What are your thoughts? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

OOOps I forget to mention---I asked my honda dealer if honda was going to come out with a work utility and he told me not to his knowledge. I feel honda makes a superior 4-wheeler since I have owned three of them---no problems and they have been worked and run very hard. I would buy one if your rumor was true. Im going to call a couple other dealers. I will post my results. Thanks. Glenn

I have never hunted with any type of atv, so I have zero knowledge on using them as a hunting tool, hence the question. The White Tail deer around here are not afraid of tractors or other equipment, but if you stop and get off the tractor, they will run away. I have storage tanks with both gas and diesel and have deer come within a few yards of them. It doesn't seem to spook them off, they still come up and eat the apples off the fruit trees. They come up to the pond to drink and bed on the back side of the dam. The deer around here are plentiful and well fed. They do a good job on the corn and bean fields and as I said I don't have to pick any apples up off the ground.
The annual rub is getting set to commence, the cooling temperature will be signaling the start of rut. Time to sight the black powder rifle in and sharpen up the bow skills. The break in the summer heat is sure welcome and I look forward to a frost ( I am a fall and winter person). The call of the wild still runs deep in man. Thanks for your response and good hunting!

I own a 2003 6x6 Ranger that I bought last Fall. I bought it after looking at all the others (mule and gator in particular). I strongly considered the diesel mule, but felt more comfortable with the traction capabilities of the 6x6 since I have some bottom fields that can get a little sloppy when its wet and around my beaver ponds. I also have a lot of hills and the engine braking does work well on the Ranger. The noise level is a little higher than I would like, but this thing will go anywhere. I have given family members rides around the property and have taken them places where they were certain that we were going to have to walk back. Needless to say, they have always come back to the barn impressed and amazed that we didn't have to walk anywhere.

I would also agree with cowboydoc that the gator is worth a look and has its niche. I believe it has a wider stance and is probably more stable, but if you want something that will take you anywhere, without worrying too much about getting stuck or having the power and speed you NEED, then the Ranger is worth a look.

I'd definitely like to see what those Kubota diesel UV's are going to look like, maybe my L4330 could share the barn with a new cousin /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif (I'd hate to give up the Ranger though).
