I am trying to decide if I can mow my lawn using a 72" mmm on a mid or large frame JD compact? I am getting a loader so I want to get the R4 tires, so I am concerned about tearing up the grass. Right now, if I go midframe, it will probably be a 3520. Large frame would be a 4120 or 4320. Just looking for anyone with experience mowing their grass with this type of machine. We just build last year on 80 acres (approximately 4 acres will be lawn and in another year probably 20 acres in small trees that will need mowing between).

Thoughts?

I have mowed with a 4300 with a 72" MMM for three years. It's an excellent finish mower and very easy to use. I mow 8 acres, and there are a lot of trees in my yard. The only thing you have to watch are the rear wheels on the deck. If you are not careful, you can rip the bark right off of a tree if you get too close. The mid size makes a great lawnmower, and it's easy enough for my wife and kids handle.

I am also looking at a 3520 with a 7 iron 72" deck.
Don't be afraid, you'll love it.

4310 with the 72" MMM. R4 tires, the rears are loaded with RimGuard. This setup dies a beautiful job, equal to anything out there. In the spring when the ground is a little soft the front tires will leave more of a mark than the rears due to the smaller contact patch. I've got a few trees and some outbuildings and with the eHydro mowing is a breeze. The cruise control comes in very handy also, I use it more than I thought I would.

I use a '99 4400 with a 60" Commercial MMM. It does an excellent job. The 4400 has the R4 tires and is 4wd. Just have to be careful on sharp turns.

If I trade this tractor in a few years I probably will get the 72" rear mounted finish mower for the convenience of quicker mower removal.

I used a 7' finish behind my 4710/w R4's last summer on 8 acres of lawn and feel it really abused my yard. I have 24 acres with 8 of them in grass. This year I plan on buying a zero turn for the few acres around the house and use the big guy on the rest. Besides, it gives my a new excuse to add some more green to my collection.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
By the way I had no ballast on and also kept my loader off.

You guys with the MMM and loader (or backhoe) - Do you take the MMM off to use the FEL or backhoe or do you leave it on for most work? Does the MMM have to come off for certain implements?
Thanks

I remove my deck for the winter. No sense getting salt on it.
Also, I clean and rake my woods, and it makes it easier.
When the grass starts to grow, I mount the deck and it stays on until winter again.

I leave the MMM on when using the FEL unless I am getting into some hard digging or rough ground. The chute and gauge wheels can get damaged if you start pushing them into hard stuff. The MMM stays on with other implements as well (except front mounted snow blower).

I mow between 4 and 8 acres with my 4400 and 72"MMM. I bought it with turf tires and it's the perfect machine for the job. It doesn't hurt the lawn unless I go flying around a corner. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I would be a bit concerned about going to a large frame tractor if it's used primarilty for mowing, simply because of the weight. But that depends on your soil I suppose.

How high does the MMM pick up off the ground?
