Don't know anything about that mod. If you want a 4x4 and don't get it , you may regret it later.Sometimes, it's better to wait & Save a little more $ and get what you want

Bought my YM1700 about 8 months ago. I still don't know the year model, but been very pleased for what I got it for. I have a John Deere 4400 with loader and it seemed everytime I turned around I had to take an implement off to use the Woods mower or bushhog. I wanted a cheap dependable diesel and I found the Yanmar. I would not depend on it to do heavy work but it handles the 4' Woods mower and the 5' bushhog perfectly. I had to add about 80 lbs. of weight on the front to stop the wheelies.
I have not added the water pump option as of yet. I am waiting to see how it does this summer
I was fortunate as the tractor only had 680 hrs. when I bought it. I highly recommend the YM1700 if you need a light duty tractor.
My wife likes the Yanmar because with the 2 cylinder knock she knows where I am in the fields if she needs me for something.

Doesn't that little tractor have a hard time with a 5 ft. cutter ? I have a 3110 & a 5 footer is all I run. I could probably run a 6 footer but, I think that would be a little much for mine

There are quite a few YM1700 and near-identical tractor owners on here. A slightly modified version of the same tractor was sold in the US when Yanmar had dealers here, it was designated YM195.

There is also a near-twin with larger-bore cylinder sleeves, YM2000, and the YM2000's US brother was YM240. That's what I have. Search here for all those models and you will find a lot of posts.

Also take a look at the US sales brochures referenced from my sig, below.

For all four of these there was an 'early' and 'late' series. Early had headlights alongside the grille, for Late the headlights are in the front/top of the grille. The only difference is the sheet metal and in a few cases you need to specify early or late to get the right replacement part.

I've read YM1700/YM2000 was sold in Japan about 77-79, and that they went from green paint to red for the Late series.

The US YM195/YM240 were all pale green, early and late, and were sold until about 1982. My parts book says it applies to years 1975 and up so I wonder if these, or the Japanese versions, were sold earlier than 75.

I've read that these are about the best supported models, and my experience over four years is that everything is available easily. I get stuff from hoyetractor.com and there are other good suppliers also.

If the size of the tractor is suitable and its condition checks out ok, you can't go wrong.

4x4 on a tractor this old could get expensive to fix, and of course raises the price. I might buy newer if I needed 4x4 and intended to use it hard. I have 2wd and consider it sufficient for my use, no problems.

So true! I read somewhere that these are right up there with the most fuel efficient tractors ever made.

(Maybe the Nebraska Tests?)

I am going to try and post a picture of the YM1700 for $1995.00. has a little rust on front grill. The owner of company (Arch's Tractors on the Creek) in Fairview, N.C. says it is a trade in for a bigger tractor. It is one of the remanufactured ones he sold earlier. Says everything works good. Will stand behind it,, I wonder if he means while it is running there on the lot???? so here goes with the picture....
I DONE IT!!!!! DANG!!!!

Yeah, the one I had would almost get me in trouble. It used so little diesel you forget to check it. Almost ran out a couple of times.

I also put a water pump on mine.

They are amazing little tractors.

If he has a track record of standing behind things then he'll certainly be able to give you numerous references you can check out from previous customers.

From his website "
There are reconditioning factories where tractors are disassembled and checked out"
And WHERE would these reconditioning factories be located? Per one well known information source "
A factory (previously manufactory) or manufacturing plant is an industrial building where workers manufacture goods or supervise machines processing one product into another." I don't think those tractors have been through a reconditioning "factory". I never have understood how they can claim to bring a tractor to 95% of original specifications. How does one measure that?

I'm not going to comment on the remanufactured part, but the YM1700/2000 has to be the best 2WD model out there in my opinion. I had a YM1700 for a few years and wished I had it back sometimes. Parts are very easy to get, even though they may be aftermarket. And they're simple to work on.

Inspector 507 thanks::: Oh by the way, on the little blue tractor site;;; you have the cutest opening page i've seen in a while...

How many hours are on the meter? I would assume that it was zeroed when sold originally if it was a recon. If he sold it and took it back on trade then he should have the contact info for the previous owner. If he won't allow you to contact him then you should walk. What kinda warranty is he offering? The previous owner may give you a heads up on something that the dealer does not know....

I see a couple of you have installed a water pump on your YM1700. If you don't mind me asking where did you purchase your water pump kits?
Did the water pump kits come with everything you need to install?
I plan to use my 5 ft. rototiller on my YM1700 and I am worried that it will run hot without the pump.

I purchased mine from Fredricks. It came with everything needed.

I got mine form Danny Parker at Parker Equipment Co ( peq.com). Kit came with everything that you need including detailed instructions.

Arch does sell VN reconditioned tractors, but this one does not appear to be one to me. The paint and decals don't look like any I've ever known them to use. What are the hours on it?
