Anyone else have an unusually large number of hummingbirds this year?

How do you know they're males?
Ruby Throated, that is the only hummers we have!
I did see maybe a female or a very young one this morning.

Light frost here this morning. But in the sun the humming birds were working away at a patch of jewelweed. Small green colored, up at sunrise.

We havent seen a hummer at the feeder )or in the gardens) for the past four days.
The feeder remains full. Last week we were refilling the feeder every day...

Bon Voyage little fighters!
We're still getting swarms of birds and wondering when the migration would begin. None know how many miles they cover in a day and where the birds wind up? I've heard different areas but not sure.

It something like 20 to 30. I'd bet your males are gone.

I hope my little birds can keep up with the pack. Some are awfully small.

You know they don't migrate in flocks? Hatching's stay longest to gain weight at known food sources.

Never knew that. We’re giving them all the food they can hold.

Jealous of you guys back East that have huge summer numbers. Out West I am in a slump before the travelers from Canada and Alaska head south. The native year-around birds are sipping periodically, but they busy with all of the other food sources available now.

In Oakland, except for a rare random flyby, not one at the feeder that was so busy in years past…

Bought a new feeder thinking might help but no change…

We were sub-par the last couple of years and this year was off to a slow start. Around the beginning of August, dozens started showing up and we went to maybe 150+ visits a day. The last week has been even busier.

From comments here I figure it's the small birds bulking up on food and getting in flying condition for the trip. Be careful little birds.
