Anyone else have an unusually large number of hummingbirds this year?

Well so much for our year round resident Annas having to wait too long for bloom to start. The bloom is on.

Mine are still here, the feeder level went down about an inch last week. They likely are going in and out of torpor if you saw my post (#137) about that. Maybe that is why your activity is down?

I did... and could be so. I will refill my feeder with fresh sweetwater this weekend when I get home. Can't hurt.

I was out pruning today and saw a small hummer in the tree next to the one I was whittling on. He, or she, convinced me to fill my feeder up again. Now just waiting to see how long it takes for them to find the fresh nectar!

I saw two at once today. My feeder is going down about a cup a week. Nothing like spring, but still a good amount considering it is January and it is one species.

Very nice! I forgot to do anything about mine when the weather dropped below freezing yesterday. Today I went out and the feeder was frozen solid. Two hummers were in the area and I figured I did not have time to thaw the feeder out. So I made a new batch, cooled it off and put up the second feeder. I figure I can swap them back and forth in and out of the house to keep one thawed out. I just hope the poor little guys do not get their tongue frozen to the feeder :shocked:

That is what I’m doing. They were trying to get at it even when frozen. I felt guilty.

What an amazing photo. I don't think I've ever seen a hummer in the snow.
