JD 3520
My father and I three years upgraded an old Ford 8N to a JD 3520. The old 8N was handed down from grandpaps farm. We used Toro mowers to mow around the houses but needed much more. Nobody farms but we wanted to maintain the land. The old 8N was used to plow snow and ran a 5' rotary mower with it. The tractor was rough and in need of a major overhaul. I convinced my dad to sell it and go with something modern to run a mid mount mower and still use the old equipment we had with the old 8N.
We looked at Kubota and JD and settled on a JD 3520 with 72" mid mount mower and 300X front loader and 60" bucket. My dad had wanted a 2X20 series but went with 3X20 series. Now 3 years later wish he had gone bigger with a 4X20 series. And we may do that!
So from above, anybody running a 4X20 series with mid mount mower? Would it be to heavy to mow with? Basically the tractor now used mainly to cut grass. Yeah we use the bucket not a much as mowing and use the bucket to move snow and use a 6' rear grader blade from the old tractor. Usually in the winter the tractor is used for hauling firewood or dragging logs.
Only reason we bought the 3520 and say not a 3320 or 3720 because that tractor with turf tires and mower happened to be sitting right there on the lot set up. Even got to demo it!

FYI
JD 3520 37HP 30 HP @ PTO
72" autoconnect MMM
300X loader
standard turf tires, ballasted
5' NewHolland rotary cutter

I'm still trying to decide on what to upgrade to from my 8N. 3720 or 4x20. What are your reasons for wanting to go bigger?

When I bought my 4702 in 2010 I wanted a MMM until I found out it did not come with an independent hydraulic ram. It uses the rockshaft to raise and lower the deck. That means your 3 pth is dedicated to the MMM. I still bought the tractor but canceled the MMM. I installed a angle 7' front blade that was supposed to fit a 4700 tractor only. It works great. One day I intend to purchase a front pto driven mower with bat wings and run it off the MM pto. I will modify the frame & hydraulics of the front blade making it with a easy (hopefully) quick changeout.

I have a 3520 with a factory cab and 72 mmm. I beleive my cab adds a lot of weight so the weight might be close to the weight of a openstation 4x20. Are you concerned with ruts? It all depends how soft your ground is. Mine is usually soft and I leave ruts from time to time. If your not having problems now, I can't imagine you will have any bigger problems. You can get some pretty wide turf tires for 4x20. Look into those maybe

My opinion: a 4x20 is too heavy to use as a lawn mower with a mid mount. Too much weight vs the size of the cut. Too much fuel consumption vs the size of the cut. Now if you are towing a 20 ft gang mower then you may be back in the size vs weight vs cut area to make it worthwhile.
