Slot machines are the big revenue generators for the casinos as they can be electronically set to, provide a continuous fixed pay back to the casino. Beware the come-on that machines pay a certain percentage to the player. The percentage includes all paybacks even those that pay back less than what was inserted for that run of the reels. Most now have so many ways to win and so many ways to insert coins/tokens the player gets confused on bets placed and bets won and for how much is is won. Plus do not believe everything as advertised.
Poker is the only game the house does not have a house mathematical advantage but they rake off each pot so the players, in effect, are renting their space. This system effects both winners and losers. The players are competing among themselves unless the house has an expert shill, that is paid by the hour, and their bankroll belongs to the house. Smart and consistent players pick up on that quickly and avoid those houses.
All the other house banked (table) games, the house earnings are based on the mathematics of the laws of probability. These laws also include the factors of time. The Casino wins most often because they gamble 24 hrs/day seven days a week and players do not. Each of the games have published probability odds for each proposition bet upon. Players can win, sometimes a lot, when the time curve is in their favor and they capitalize on it by using winnings (house money) to increase bets. Always playing the same bet will eventfully/usually result in he casino getting all the players money. Each of the table games have published "Basic Strategy" for playing the games and provide the odds of winning each proposition/opportunity.
The most popular table games ranked by best odds for the player are:
Craps; stay away from the Center of Table high odds bets,
Blackjack
Roulette
Worst is the Wheel of Fortune and the gimmicks outside the game basic
strategy.
There are many books by expert/consistent professional gamblers and a lot of info on the internet. Read, read, and re-read, practice, practice, and practice before each trip to the casino
It takes a lot of knowledge and practice to become proficient at each game and its basic strategy. I learned early on:
Be consistent and do not stray from basic strategy no matter what;
Bet more when winning, bet less when losing, and after each loss go back to your basic bet, establish a money management system;
Establish your loss limit for the trip and each table nd stick with it
Resist vehemently getting greedy;
Leave the free booze alone, it is part of the house strategy, it is free for a reason,
Leave a table when it goes cold now! Your streak there is over, and you will lose any winnings;
Winning is hard work, losing is easy;
Winning and Losing streaks can be long or short, capitalize on the long winning streaks, and quit quick on the losing ones.
Blackjack and Craps are the bets odds for the player, approaching 1:1 when playing with Basic Strategy
Novice players, stupid mistakes, booze, and greed increase the house odds exponentially beyond the pure probability odds. DO NOT BE PART OF THAT CROWD
In my younger day my wife and I were consistent gamblers in Reno and Las Vegas. We made a trip every other month minimum, usually 3-7 days. We both played blackjack (BJ) and I played craps at times when BJ was slow. We both studied BJ and I studied craps continually and practiced at home often and before trips. We each had $1,000 cash bankrolls we never added too during a trip and banked excess after each trip.
We consistently payed for our trips, had meals and lodging compted, drank very little booze and banked money often. Our basic bet was $5 for her and $10 for me. I was the more aggressive in capitalizing on hot streaks. Did we lose? yes Did we win mega bucks? no. Our largest trip win: $10K, largest one table win: $4K, largest trip loss: $500- we quit before losing more. This is over a 20 year period after our kids left the nest..
In between trips; at home we worked as dealers and pit bosses at charity Reno Nights for various clubs and churches where we were members or friends of members at roughly 15-20/year. I even managed games at times. I had the state license required to pit boss and manage. We had to turn down opportunities. The rise of the Indian casinos put an end to this enterprise.
Did we consider this hobby enjoyable? Yes, immensely, it gave us lot of time together, as jobs and finances kept us from national and internationally traveling. I had to shoehorn all into a military reserve career and job travel.
Overall gaming today, due to smaller crowds, has disintegrated into casinos doing things that skew the natural odds. !0 deck shoes, lowering the table odds below the natural odds, continuous automatic shuffle machines, shuffle after each hand for single and double deck games, many many gimmick games and betting spots.
Today: I am too old. Study and play Craps if natural odds have not been lowered, and look for single/double deck BJ opportunities. Ignore slot machines the Casino bread nd butter.
