Antifreeze

What type of antifreeze are members here useing ?
My tractor is due for an replacement think of switching to an ELC rather than changing every two years ....

There are a couple of other anti-freeze threads at this time;
One is diesel antifreeze,
Another is check your antifreeze.

And here's more info then you probably want with no good answers,
There are 3 main types of "anti-freeze" in use currently for engines;
The old style Glycol,
The newer HOAT
The newest OAT
they are not compatible and mixable, mixing them is quite likely to wind up with sludge.

My take is look at all your vehicles and there specs and requirements and see if you can standardize on one brand and then flush and clean well and go for it.

Decided to to use Rotella ultra ELC after a complete distilled water flush . will keep a close check on the coolant voltage
Hopefully it will last longer than the factory coolant...

Manual calls for low tox propylene glycol coolant Astm D5216 short life antifreeze... never have cared for propylene coolant .....

Shorter usefull life not as good heat transfer , most will go above .4 volts in a year or less which means corrosion .

A little bit of antifreeze on the tip of your tongue will NOT hurt you. Ethylene glycol (the green stuff put out by Prestone) is sweet. The red stuff is bitter. I have been told that the red stuff is compatible with the green.
The voltage test works better.

The bitterness is an additive ....has no effect on coolant /antifreeze performance

The glycol types (PG and EG) are IAT coolants.

Is our new style LS engines a liner engine if so then we need a coolant supplement ? The only thing my owners manual says is ASTM D5216 that tells me its a Propylene Glycol base engine coolant Automobile and Light-Duty Service, so i would think that would mean that our engine is not a liner engine like the old MF 135 Perkins engine and not need SCA or Supplement coolant additive.

Can't speak for all but my XR4040C (XR4000 series)does not have liners according to service manual , if the repair value is is exceeded ,replace engine block compl...

Personally , I flushed my engine with distilled water and switched to an extended life antifreeze ...not to protect liners (my tractor doesn't have liners "unfortunately") but to protect
Other components of the cooling system...

I really don't know antifreeze. But I know that I have a 2003 JD dozer, got used. A little low on antifreeze. Took the cap off and the inside looked like new. It was really clean. I went back with the best JD antifreeze. I know JD does not make it. They have someone put their name on it. I was told to get the best with the most anti corrosion I could get. Or get an additive to put in it for the water pump and to stop the corrosion.

A good antifreeze is a must...change it as recommended or if voltage exceeds 0,4 volts
.got to be careful sca additives to much they will drop out of suspension plugging your system....

Cool guard II is an excellent antifreeze.
