MTD Lawn Tractor (Breaks almost every time I use it!!)
When operating the winch, it is suggested that a blanket be laid across the cable to prevent "whipping" of the cable if it should break or fail.
Anyone had any experience with this? Is it effective? Any other suggested techniques?

Yes it works and yes it causes ALOT of damage if one breaks.

Two items I carry in my ATV's rear mounted toolbox is a six foot length of very heavy duty nylon tow strap with sewn loops on both ends. I also have three feet of 3/8 chain with a quick link attached. Either one of these items (or both) serve well to weight the winch cable as needed and can be used for numerous other purposes... and they take up little space in the toolbox.
