Not to take anything away from this man but IMO a (R&R) "legend" is much more than just a musician or singer...even stand out musicians...

IMO...the last true (R&R) legend that died was Tom Petty and his passing did not garner near the number of comments...go figure...!

I listened to his stuff in the last few years. "Saving Grace" particularly. If I knew he had passed, I have forgotten. Feel kind of bad about that.

For the Rush fans... I've been following this band called YYNOT for a couple years. They started out as an internet collaboration spearheaded by the guitar player. They have a young lady named Rocky singing Geddy's stuff and doing it quite well. The bass and guitar tones are spot on. Oddly the third drummer just quit. Anyway, they do a few shows now around the country and have put out two albums of originals with an occasional hint at Rush. YYNOT Anthem

Some of you just aren't happy unless you're arguing. I liked Tom Petty but didn't feel he was in the same class as Rush. They are only one of two bands who I tried to buy every album in my younger days. (The other was Led Zepplin.) As I said when I started the thread though, not everybody appreciated them. That's OK.

If you want to argue, please go back to trying to rationalize why orange isn't the best color tractor.

I like Tom Petty and I like Rush. I've never heard a Tom Petty song that I didn't like. I can't stand Geddy Lee's voice. But I still like their lyrics and sound. Just hard for me to listen to it but once in a while.

Now let's keep the politics out of this thread. ;)

First of all I never argue (on the Internet)...it's a sure sign you rode the short bus...!

Secondly...making lists of greatest musicians is 100% opinion...usually based on familiarity and personal preference not necessarily records sold or talent etc...

All the musical instruments in the world do not make up for natural talent...

One last thing...many don't realize that in recording studios drum machines are more prevalent than live drummers...

IMO the term "legend" is used much too loosely...

Come on, how hard is it to just let people say a kind word about someone that they esteemed without throwing in a nickel opinion?

Loosen up fellows; everybody's taste in music is different...like they say, a difference of opinion is what makes a horse race. I prefer classic Country, and have never listened to any of the rock groups. That stuff gets on my nerves; closest I ever got was some classic Doo Wop, like the Diamonds and Lil' Darlin. My all time favorite non-country music group was the Nairobi Trio...and I can't even tell you their names or the instruments they played.

My closest friend in HS said that he sounds like The Chipmunks.

I dunno about the Chipmunks, but when I first heard them (mid-ish 70s) I had no idea if he was male or female. Kind of a Janis Joplin-y voice, an unusual first name and the album cover photo didn't help much either. :confused3:

Yep, a Rush cover band with a female singer does come close.

Geddy's proper name was Gary but his Yiddish mother pronounced it Geddy his buddies caught on and called him the same name and it stuck

Ok, I really am very tired of the girl/cat meme, but this one made me laugh.

Dang. I watched it all the way through. Twice. The ganja smoke was thick when they wrote that skit.

For some unexplained reason, I was never really into rock bands and their members at the time. Many years later I caught a documentary on RUSH and wondered who the old lady was that was traveling with them. Figured it was one of their mothers. Then I figured it out.

And really, 38 posts into a RUSH thread and no mention of The Camera Eye?

Yeah; there was a certain amount of creativity went into the visuals, but the story line sucked.
