Box Scraper Another Road Grader Thread

I have been looking at 3 point road graders and have read the threads on this forum. I have a heavy duty 6' Woods box blade that I don't use anymore and would like some feedback on this idea. I want to cut out the back of the thing to the top of the existing blade and weld on an extension at the rear where I can attach another blade to essentially turn it into a drag road grader. The front blade would of course be straight across but I would made the rear blade angle adjustable to aid in build a crown. The graders I have seen have both blades parallel to each other so is there a problem in having the front one straight and the rear one angled?

Are you planning on cutting the height down on the box blade? One of the reasons that the grader blades work so well is that the road material flows over the cutting edges. I doubt that much material is going to flow over a full height blade. (18"-24") As far as having the front blade straight, that would be fine and others that have built their own have made them with straight blades and have worked out fine. One of the reasons for having the blades at an angle is that they tend to cutout wash-boarding in roads better than when straight.

Just my opinion, but I would keep the box blade and either build a grader blade from scratch or just buy one. It would be a shame to cut up a good box blade.

You will not be happy modifying a box blade... like MtnViewRanch said, keep it or sell it and buy the steel to build one or buy a new or used ready made one.
Look at how the angled blades are placed and how they are braced... none of that has happened by accident, you need a lot of weight and adequate length to end up with a smooth finish.
Removing wash board is very important... better than just filling it in.
Building a proper crown will take a little practice with an appropriate tool. KennyV
