yep.. fender bender in a compact can total it. fender bender in a larger vehicle is just that.. ding in large vehicle.. crushed up tin can if the toehr vehicle is compact.

Sad thing is, not everybody can afford to drive a one-ton truck as their primary vehicle so they are forced to drive something smaller and fragile. I remember riding as a passenger in a '77 Chevette one time and I was thinking at the time "Geez, I would feel safer on my MOTORCYCLE than in this tiny s***box..." but I also recall back in 1974 when the people who lived in the condo next to me had a Honda 600 that the guy used as his primary commuter vehicle...compared to that Honda the Chevelle I felt uncomfortable in was pretty sturdy...

I paid less for my f350 than I did for my wife's kia rio that was totaled in a low speed fender bender ( no air bags or anything ).

just can't buy a new 50k$ 1 ton... gotta get one with a few years and miles on it..

Yes, the best defence for an accident is not get into one in the first place, but......

In 2001, I had a 1990 F250. Even though it was a 2wd, it still had a pretty tall stance.

I wasn't paying attention on the traffic lights as I was following the stop and go traffic in front of me and overshot a yellow light. By the time the truck came to a stop, I was in the middle of the intersection (no room to go forward to get out of the intersection) . The light turned red for me and turned green for the oncoming left turn lane while I looked in the rear view mirror to see if I can back up.

Don't know what the other guy was paying attention to, but, I watched him as he started moving, steered left, and ran straight into the drivers side of my truck as I sat still in the middle of the intersection. We both pulled over into the Wendy's parking lot to check out the damages.....

I lost my front hub cap (it popped off with the impact, not damaged, but the next car that came through the intersection ran over it) while the Hondas' front end was totalled (I presumed it went under the truck frame)..... Other than that, I still don't know where his Honda Prelude made contact with my truck. No scratches on the truck body, no scratches on the frame. Even the rust spots on the frame stayed rusty!

Yeah, crumble zone cars save passenger lives at times, but those of us who are experienced in handling big vehicles/equipments tend to pay attention to the limitations/capabilities of the vehicles we drive. Given that, I would rather be in the bigger, full-framed vehicle any day.

i agree. I don't mind if the person who hits me has their crumple zone car crumple up touching my rear bumper / trailer hitch.

that's ok by me..

I have seen the pictures of the vehicle of a customer at my former employer, they bought a new "framed vehicle" because their driver was killed when he rear ended a big rig, and the truck didnt crumple...

You may FEEL safer in a truck, but in the same 40mph crash with a full size sedan on the back of the big rig the guy would have lived... Yes, if he rear ended a sedan instead of a big rig, it would have been a different story.

However there IS a big difference in damage from the parking lot, if you have a truck or a sedan. and even a sedan can just have a scratch after totaling the front end of a compact at low speed.

My family and i were on vacation in CO. We had pulled our 40 foot fifth wheel with our newly rebuilt truck. 1978 ford 250 custom. We put a big heavy steel flatbed on the truck, fixed all the rust and put new paint on it. It was so clean. We get out there on a Saturday. The following Wednesday they had a green light were sitting in the middle of the intersection waiting to turn. A guy coming from the right driving a toyota picup ran the redlight to get up on to the internstate. He hit us had to be well over 50mph.

The truck was a super cab. He hit us at the door post in the passenger side. His front bumper was behind where the engine should be. His dog went though the windshield. I dont know if it lived, i still feel sorry for the dog. He was all right for what i can remember. He shoved us sideways a good 15feet. He crushed our door post in about 6inches. Bent the cab mounts. How ever didnt break the glass in the door. We were able to still drive the truck. Only real injury was my grandmother broke a rib from the seat belt. Had he hit us three feet farther back, he would have cut himself right in half on that flat bed. The flat bed was 3/8 diamond plate with tool boxes below it.

Come to find out the guy had no insurance, gave a false address ect ect. Thankfully our insuance company paid for the truck, they totaled it. I think they valued the truck at almost 30 grand. We managed to buy it back and put a new cab on it.

Had we been in anything other then a heavy truck i would have lost my father mother and grandmother in a blink of an eye.

Dozens of collisions?.... lol.... Perhaps you need to brush up on your driving abilities? or move out of the area you live in where many seemed not to be good drivers.... :)

I've had a totoal of 4 collisions in my 25 years of driving. First one, I hydro-planed in a downpour and tapped the Jeep in front of me (plastic nose damaged on my Cutlass; nothing on the Jeep). Second one, I got rear ended in the same Cutlass in Boston rush hour traffic (guy tried to change lanes from a dead stop with not enough room). Third, my little Toyata pickup got crunched (frame bent) at a red light by a street sweeper behind me who lost his brakes. The F250 in front of me suffered no damage besides a few scratches on his bumpers; the Toyota was totaled. Both the F250 and my Toyota were already stopped when the street sweeper pushed my truck into his and his into a statie in front of him.... lol... which made it so very convenient for reporting the accident!

That was the last 'little' truck I ever had..... All in all, only one accident was deemed my fault.....

As I mentioned before, big rig drivers tend to be responsible and cautious drivers. And, thus, don't get into big collisions..... By big rig drivers, I don't mean the young punks with pickups, old folks with slow reactions, nor soccer moms/pops with Suburbans/SUVs. I mean folks who regularly tow big, heavy trailers and/or haul heavy loads.

Hmmm..... re-reading my post, I know it sounds like I am being a bit snooty..... I don't mean to.... I simply want to urge folks to take driving more seriously and pay more attention whenever they get behind their wheels..... I mean, we've all seen too many lax drivers who are accidents waiting to happen.....
