I am so glad to find this community! I just bought a 16-acre farm and need help! I don't even know what to ask. I have worked on horse farms for decades and used tractors/bush hogs and front loaders all along, but I just used what they had and never paid attention to what I was working with. Now I need to figure out what I need. From the reading I've done (mostly here, thank you) I think I want to stick with a Kobuta or John Deere but let me know if I'm wrong. I would prefer an older tractor that is easier to care for - not run totally by computers. It appears the JD 1020 (or one of it's relatives) seems to be a good work horse and reliable.
My land is gently rolling and most of my use will be just bush hogging the pastures but I will use it to work in the 2 acres of woods to clear out a bit - drag trees mostly I would suspect. I don't know if I will need a front end loader but do I want to get one just in case? I used to use it for hauling so many things. I would also like to get a smaller flat bed trailer to haul things around the farm.
I'm going to start with local companies to try to find a used tractor and bush hog. What sorts of questions do I want to ask them? There are so many specifications for a tractor, most I have no idea about. From reading it appears I want a 40-50hp. Do I want 2WD or 4WD (I have no idea what the tractors I've used had). I might be able to buy a 6' bush hog from the seller, not sure yet - no idea of brand but it's green color and in very good condition (appears like it has been under shelter but since he doesn't have one it must be pretty new - tractor is almost rusted away though). What sorts of questions do I want to ask them?
Can I find a tractor / bush hog for about $10K or will I only find problems?
