None at this time.
My wife and I made the decision to put our twelve year old French Beauceron down today. His heart was failing along with bad hips, fatty tumors, etc., etc. so it was time. "Dually", so named for the breeds prominent double dewclaws, was perhaps the most loyal dog either of us ever had. At 130 lbs, he was a gentle giant even perhaps a sissy. Though a bit of a clutz in the house, outside he was ever so graceful as he would "run like the wind". He would sprawl across the sofa leaving me just enough room at the end and lay his head in my lap. As I stroked him, he would purr like a cat.

Searching for another member to our family at the time, my wife had mentioned always wanting one of the breed, a herding dog that dates to the 1600's. Back in February of 2000 when Dually came to us, supposingly, there were only around 500 in the US. None of the veterinarians that ever met Dually had ever seen another nor have we except for pictures or just in the last few years on the dog shows.

I found Dually on the net. A product of a puppy mill of all things, he was being fostered in Nashua, NH. Leaving our then home in PA at around midnight after working the evening shift, we drove all night to get there then turned right around to go home. Not being so good at traveling, Dually was carsick the whole trip home. Other than some nightly crate training to fully housebreak Dually, he was one of those dogs that always knew what to do with very little correction.

As we drove home from the vet's office, the heavy rain lightened up then stopped long enough for me to get a hole dug and bury Dually. No time to mourn though because while I was putting the tractor away, my wife informed me that one of our stallions had a gaping chest wound. Sheese! As we cleaned the wound up, we decided we had better bring the same vet out. About the time that the vet arrived, the sky opened up again along with some thunder and lightning.

Seems the stallion had rammed into a bucket hanger in his stall. We got him patched up and he will be fine but what a day!

Hopefully, I will get my picture attached correctly. Dually is on to the left of my wife and his buddy Oscar (the "blond" Belgium Malinois) is on the right. Unfortunately, Oscar has hip issues and problems related to calcium deposits on his spine so his days are numbered as well.

It will not be totally quiet in our house though. We also have a min pin and a yellow lab or golden retriever/hound mix. I suppose after some time we will take in another family member though I don't think that we would want another 130 pounder. Thanks in advance for understanding.

So sorry to hear about Dually. A beautiful animal. I am not familiar with the breed but he was a looker for sure. I know you are seeing him in your mind, we get so used to our pets being with us. With dogs, it's like a presence is gone and something is missing.

We recently lost our female Leonberger, Sophie. She would have been 11 yrs. old in February, not too bad for a giant breed dog. She just sort of wore out and went into shock. BP down to about nothing, very faint pulse. Vet said not much to do really at her age. She'd had some less severe spells earlier, so we figured it was time.

I hope your horse is healing up. You will be looking for another dog I bet before you know it.

Dave.

Sorry to hear about the loss of that big guy, yeah it will be quieter now with out him thumping around. The other pets will be going through a mourning period as well with out him, such a huge presence.

It's always a heartbreak when we loose a four legged member of the family. You'll find yourself thinking of him often, I lost by buddy Frasier about 2 years ago and a day does not pass that he doesn't cross my mind.

That is a terrible loss. I guess in some way's you were at least afforded the decision and it wasn't sudden. "dually was a sure handsome animal.

We have one of ours buried near the back yard, it is truly sad to loose a friend you KNOW was loyal when loyalty is so hard to find.

I can feel your pain, I had to put our 12 yr. old lab Sadie down a couple of months ago. She was in great shape except for the cancer that was eating her up.

I buried her by my gate on my farm, she is my eternal watchdog and is always there to greet me when I pull up.

It is always a tough day when one of the family passes. I was with Sadie right until the end and somehow that made it a little easier. I kept telling her we were gonna fix it so her leg would never bother her again...and we did.

PS...I HATE CANCER! Sometimes I think it's gonna get us all.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Loosing a dog it s a kick in the fanny.....

If the dog is one of those really special ones, it is like someone stomping on your heart. I think it would be easier to deal with the heart stomp.

Got a photo of my Kelly up on the wall....

The kids put a posted note on her picture wishing her a happy Christmas.

Later,
Dan

He was a beauty and Oscar is also a looker. Your description of a gentle giant seems to have fit him to a tee and I'm sure he will be missed.

Sorry for your loss. We do get attached to our animals at times. Especially those that we share the house with. We've got a Cocker Spaniel that will be 15 this year. July to be exact. He gets around pretty good but his hearing is going as well as his eye sight. He's gotten pretty good at hand signals. I hate to mention it but I've already sized him up for a box.:(

This may have been posted before, sorry for your loss.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Not much more I can add that hasn't been said already. My condolences to you and your family. I have a 10 year old Golden Retriever...he's my best buddy. I also have a pug.....ha....we call them the "Odd Couple" they are inseparable.

Turbo...I always have a hard time reading that. Can't keep a dry eye. :(

We know when we get them that this day will come; but that doesn't make it any easier. It seems that you gave Dually and his buddy a good life.

Take care

I'm not familiar with the breed, but what a handsome boy.

We are mourning with you and know that what you did for Dually, you did out of love. Dually will be waiting for you to join him at the Bridge.

Sorry to read about your loss. You picture shows a fantastic farm for a doggie to be at. He enjoyed a wonderful life.

I hate these threads, they always bring a tear because I know just what you're feeling.
It's the toughest decision we have to make as animal lovers.
Just rest assured that you made the right one for him and he'll be waiting on the otherside with nothing but love in his heart.

Dogs should to be made to last longer than man. As a species, they are certainly more worthy than the short life they are endowed with. Sorry for your loss.

I wish I could say something more than I'm sorry. Arrow said it well.

I lost the best dog that ever owned me last week to cancer. I wonder how I'll ever get over her. Maybe someday we both will.

Good luck, Mark

Mark, I am sorry to hear of your loss too. We lost a rottie to cancer a few years ago. She was having problems so we decided to have some exploratory surgery. Long story short, they found cancer that for some reason had not been detected so we made the hard decision.

At least with Dually, we knew it was time and for the best though it is still a loss.

Having had a long history with dogs, I thought that I would never have another dog so special but I was wrong. Looking back, I have had a number of "special" dogs. The thing is to me at least is that they are special in their own way. You just need to let go of any pre-expectations of friends of the past.

For example, my other dog in the photo, Oscar is as I said, a Belgium Malinois. The breed is somewhat like a border collie for example in that they generally do not make a good house dog. Oscar, another rescue, is a trained drug dog and a certified therapy dog. I guess due to his training, you cannot get him up on a sofa (which is probably a good thing). He does have the ability to bring a smile to the most sullen face though (along with the ability to find the stash, lol).

Anyway, thanks to all who have expressed their kind thoughts. I don't think that I had better show this thread to my wife though. The poem that turbo36 posted would probably do her in. Very touching.
