Sure hope you are not crazy because the only thing that kept me from building a 4wd yard tractor is the lack of cash to do it.

I JUST lost 2 hours last night watching YouTube videos of DIY garden tractors.
The best one I saw was a Russian that somehow converted a walk behind 2 wheel tractor into a 4WD rider.

I built a tractor to mount a Woods backhoe and push blade. I used a front wheel drive engine and trans axle mounted North South instead of East West. The half shaft that normally went to the left front wheel went to a 4 speed GM truck transmission. A short driveshaft connected the 4 speed to a narrowed one ton rear end. The rear wheels were some 900-20 truck wheels with adapter plates to mount them to the one ton axle. The trans axle differential had to be welded solid. It also provides about a 4 to 1 reduction between the engine transmission and the GM transmission. The whole project was done with a cutting torch, a 4.5" grinder, 1/2" hand drill and a tombstone welder. Go for it "Red Neck Engineering" is fun.

Ok Thanks for the heads up on things.. As for an engine i think a 16hp briggs and stratton engine should be enough.. If all fails power wise then a small 4 cly.. I will post pictures of progress.. Hoping for advice as i go..

A fella here use to make small cats he used 2 Datson trans missions one mounted forward and 1 backwards he said for gear reduction. I don't know anything about it except what he told me he did. O do know he sold at least 1/2 doz. of them.

Mounting one backwards will not provide any reduction, it will do just the opposite.

There have been some fine self-built tractors here but it takes a lot of both work, determination and creativity.
