Almost quit... on Stump

Well almost. And my neighbor said I will never get it out... well I proved him wrong :thumbsup:. Did it with the CT235 and BH7500. It's like digging with a spoon on this bugger.. another stump removed and hundreds more to go...

If you have a lot of stumps to remove, you might consider investing in one of the backhoe tooth thingies that cuts roots. Cutting roots is the key to easier removal.

yeah I agree, a root ripper attachment to backhoe is exactly what you need for the terrible tap roots. I dug up several maple stumps similar size to your stump with a SMALLER tractor/BH then you did! I really wished for a ripper tooth then!

My bucket has fairly sharp edges that will cut through most roots.

A simple home made tool is a "Pickle Fork". The raised side can be sharpened if needed for root cutting. It was made for shallow trenching, but works well on roots.

Why would someone buy a tractor & back hoe, then go out & spend $200.00 a day to rent one????:thumbsup:

Looks like the bobcat handeled it no problem. :thumbsup: A ripper tooth would be a great attachment for your backhoe I have to admit.

I like everyone's idea but... where's the fun on that? No seat time for my tractor? It is the reason I bought it anyway. I'm already on it too deep. I could have grass already growing on it if only I listened to my wife to have someone else do it (less expense than tractor and implements I have now) but I want to have/need reason to get a tractor . Anyway my wife said I have 30 years to do it... :laughing: since we just built this new house.

I understand: have tractor, want to use it, fun to do. Just remember that it's hard on your tractor, very hard.

I did 3 or 4 big stumps and then decided that was enough, especially after I watched a big excavator come in and take out a stump in 2 minutes that would have taken me 8 to 10 hours. I currently have a very big maple stump in my front yard. I cut it off flush, planted flowers around and placed a statue on it. It will stay there..... at least until I decide to pay a stump grinder. Regardless it's not coming out. Just too big a hole and quite a mess. Besides, I'd rather save the wear and tear on my tractor.

Oh how boring it would be if we all used our tractors for exactly what they are rated for. Who has not raised the back end when lifting something a bit to heavy for the loader?

I like it Interesting attachment.would it be better to have it somehow in the middle of the bucket to equalize forces? But Im sure the edge is better for getting into small spots.. thanks for sharing...

I'd do it just like you did. If you leave roots in the ground you'll be filling in a low area for the next ten years as the roots decay. Just get er done.

Me. With loaded tires and an implement on the back, I can't do it. Hit the relief setting on the loader first. Not a good thing to do either. Just read what happened to the DK55 that put on the weight on the front axle recently in the Kioti forum.

This was workout for my little Groundbreaker X 6500 when I first got it.

Oddly, very little axe chopping of roots. Granted it was a few years ago but I think it was more than a day of seat time!:laughing:

That type of tooth needs to be on outside edge and braced to side of bucket as shown otherwise all pressure is in middle of cutting edge and likely to break of at the tooth weld.

Just an update on my journey.... I got rid of the idea of cutting the trees and digging the stumps. I've been doing the "push method" now which is dig around the tree and push the whole tree. It is much better :thumbsup:. I know show picture of it or it never happened. Pics later...

Digging first and pushing a little higher on the tree does work better if you have the room for it to fall. Once you get it to start leaning, the weight of the tree helps. I've done a few that way and with some, I had to tie a rope higher on the tree and pulled with the tractor. Many of the roots that are hard to cut with the bh bucket break with the tree going over. Just remember to have a longer rope than the tree is tall.

I agree with pushing the trees over whole. My uncle cleared several hundred black spruce trees with a bobcat, worked very fast pushing them over.:2cents:
