cant seem to get the compressor to start

On your 4450? Low pressuse switch? Have you checked to make sure it has freon in it? Check the little square thing mounted in the wire about 6 inches back from the compressor plug. Its a fuse. Make sure you have power through it and into compressor.

I agree on checking Freon. Also could be a loose circuit breaker located just in front of dash on LH side if it's a JD 4450 in your profile.
