Average annual income was $13-15k for a family of 4. Most families shared 1-2 small motorcycles for transportation.
Sounds like poverty to me
Maybe by American standards, but for much of Asia that's livin' large.

I understand the worry, but I dont think you want employement propped up by inefficient, place holder, employees that dont actually create or do anything, that can be eliminated by an advanced algorithm?

We could have propped up employment by not pressuring CNC in machining; and it might have worked for 5 or even 10 years, but in the end, the crash would be worse when it does self correct.
So, pray tell, what will all these people whose jobs have been eliminated by AI do for a living? Some sort of "universal income" funded by ???
Many of these tech jobs require specialized training and skills, not something you could learn OJT like in the old days. Not everyone has the aptitude (or $ to go to school to learn) required.

Agree that the whole AI stampede looks unstoppable, but it could easily turn into a huge Pandora's box.

Every new technology causes displacement of labor. People have this strange idea that when an industry becomes more efficient, they somehow eat the profits and the money disappears. In reality when efficiency increases in a capitalist system, prices are reduced or dividends increase. This means that the money goes somewhere else. When people quit buying buggy whips and blocks of ice for the icebox, they spent money on automobiles and refrigerators resulting in new jobs in those industries. The money in the system represents the human effort expended and will always be spent or invested.

For quite some time we have been hearing that kids graduating college with multiple degrees can't find a job that pays a 'living' wage. That's not AI's fault. That's the failure of the education and social structures.
We still need tradesmen. We need people to build things, to service things, and to fix things. Physical work producing tangible results.
Did we really think that 10 million art school diplomas would feed a generation?

Well, you know, is it worse than the alternative? We are rapidly approaching peak suicide time of the year, and if there are folks getting some comfort from talking to AI, rather than being "alone", and its their last thread, who are we to judge. Maybe not healthy, but maybe like chemo, unhealthy but better than the alternative?

Also, got to seperate "entertainment", playing with AI for fun, from "talking to it" as a replacement for human interaction.
Lots of lonely people, out there. Agreed, AI as a companion is like Wonderbread is to food. Hardly healthy, but maybe better than nothing, for those in need.

I'm no expert, but I can think of a dozen without trying:
  • Building power plants
  • operating power plants
  • maintaining power plants and infrastructure
  • building data centers
  • working in data centers
  • maintaining data centers
  • Processor engineering
  • Data systems engineering
  • neural network engineering
  • Circuit board layout
  • Manufacturing of data center hardware
  • Manufacturing of power distribution hardware
I could probably go on for an hour...

This reminds me of a conversation with an old block mason in mid 2008... As the world as we knew it was in active total collapse. He told me "if it gets that bad, we will either be in prison or building prisons, either way, you won't starve"

I think some people miss what I think the point of this thread is. Its not a philosophical argument; its here, so use it, or don't, but you can't stop change. I take the approach of, I need to learn to take advantage of its usefulness. If you are no longer in the work force, or are exiting in next 3-5 years, hiding is an option. Ive got 25-30 years left to work, and hiding isnt at option
