I am a brand new homeowner with 5 acres. I have never owned a tractor and am looking to buy one for mainly mowing and general chores. I have found a 1964 Ford 2000 for sale. The ad reads...

1964 FORD 2000 GAS TRACTOR & IMPLEMENTS, 4 FORWARD SPEEDS PLUS REVERSE, GASOLINE 4 CYLINDER, 5' SQUEALER BUSH HOG, SCRAPE BLADE, AND SCOOP BUCKET, REAR TIRES HAVE 100% TREAD, FRONT TIRES ARE EXCELLENT, 12 VOLT SYSTEM, NEW STARTER, REBUILT CARBURATOR, NEW SPARK PLUGS, WIRES, DISTRIBUTER CAP, ROTOR BUTTON, AND POINTS/CONDENSER, EVERYTHING WORKS PERFECT, VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF. $3000.00. 706-633-0986. YOU MAY BUSH HOG MY FIELD AS MUCH AS YOU WANT TO TEST THE TRACTOR.

Is a Ford 2000 a decent tractor for a newbie to learn on?

Decent to learn to operate??? or decent to learn to work on???

They are definatally easy to work on.

To learn to operate, its not difficult, but not as easy as something modern with HST. I think powersteering was optional on the 2000, so it wont turn super easy if it is manual steering. And if you catch a rut while turning, it can yank the wheel out of your hand.

The 2000 was a live PTO, so that is a plus over an 8n. Especially if mowing/bushhogging.

But, bottom line is each persons comforts and learning abilities are different. So I'd say take him up on his offer and go bushhog some of his field and see if you like it.

I am really new to tractors. I have a lot of experience with autos (fix/rebuilding) so I am familiar with working on mechanical things. So, here is my tractor question. What is HST?

HST is similar but not the same as an "automatic transmission" in a car/truck.

Hydrostat

Kinda like the lawnmowers that have a forward and reverse pedal. Makes changing directions better. But you probabally wont find one of them unless you look about 30 years newer than you are.

3000$ is a -GOOD deal- for that 2000 prior model.

has a mower, blade and scoop. that's 600$ of implements at VERY used prices.

newish rear tires ( 12.4-28 are standard ) are worth a couple hundred each

carb rebuild and wire set is 50$ value

new start and tune up and electrical system upgrade is worth 300$

so far that tractor is costing 1700$ :)

If it was near me I'd pic it up.. :)

real basic 4 banger crashbox.. easy to use.

only thing to make it better is if it was a rowcrop.. :) :)

that's one of my 2 favorite to drive machines.

the rowcrops bite you a lil bit with teh bull gear.. but i bet an ag model with large tires like the 14.9-28 I have, plus a coathanger over to the governor and a sherman might get you there.

I guess I didnt realize the row-crops bull gears were a "gear-down"

I just assumed they had the same ground speed as a non-row-crop with the same tires and tranny.

Guess I learn something new everyday.

it's a slight but niticeable hit.

On mine I run a size larger tires.. a 14.9-28 so I probably make up the difference. that and a coat hanger and she will fly pretty good!
