I've had wrens start to build a nest in a ball cap hanging on rocking chair on our porch..it hadn't been there for two full days....

How about adding a hint of the content to the title next time though...!

I hung a feeder in my chicken house in a similar manner. When I grabbed it to put it in a pen with some new chicks I had recently bought it was FULL of mice. They had quite the little commune in there.

Those wrens can really take over an area. I've found nests inside PVC pipe fittings, on top of lights and even in a coffee can that I was using to store extra lug nuts.

Wrens in the containers are ok by me. Now the wasps in the cowbell hanging by the gate sent me to the hospital when I tried to ring their residence. They posted notice of their displeasure on my forehead.:bandaid:

Great find. The birds have taken over all my outdoor light fixtures and my security camera (that one makes for some interesting pictures). In a few weeks they'll be on their way.

We have several different types of wasp that nest everywhere, the small ones seem to be the most aggressive. And, of course the mud wasps which cause the most problems, although I've never been stung by one.

This, the Carolina Wren are prolific here. The males can be compulsive nest builders. They will build many nests but choose only one for breeding. They (the sleeping birds) are often found in clothes left hanging on the line after evening and will surprise you when you go to remove the laundry.
I like having them around, the birds have a pleasant call and they are great insect hunters.

Unfortunately, Carolina Wrens made a nest on top of the transmission of my tractor above the PTO shaft this spring in only 3 days that I didn't use it. I tried moving it to a mutually acceptable place. I believe this nest was one of the ones built by the male but not used, since another one nearby was also built and used.
