I picked up a used Woods RB850 over the weekend. It came equipped with aftermarket cylinders for tilt and offset, but not angle. According to the manual, the angle and offset cylinders should be 3.5 x 1.50 x 16 and the tilt 3.5 x 1.25 x 8. Furthermore, 1600 psi double relief valves should be used on the angle and offset cylinders.

The previous owner used a Grizzly 3.5 x 1.25 x 16 for the offset, and no double relief valve.

The tilt cylinder is also a Grizzly:

I removed the fittings and drained the fluid. It was very dark. I also noticed some pitting on the chrome on both shafts. The 3/8" hoses are very brittle and cracked.

Would I be better off getting new cylinders and hoses, or would I be ok just cleaning out what I got (even with the offset cylinder rod being 1.25" and not 1.50" as per the manual?

Also, how important is it to use the factory recommended double relief valves?

Here's a schematic view of all the cylinders for the blade:

rb850partsdiagram.jpg

If I go all new, I was thinking of getting the following:

Angle and offset cylinders:

Surplus Center - 3.5X16X1.5 FIELDMATE DA HYD CYL

Tilt cylinder:

Surplus Center - 3.5X8X1.25 FIELDMATE DA HYD CYL

And then a pair of these double relief valves:

Surplus Center - 1/2 NPT 30 GPM 1500-3000 PSI HYD CUSHION VALVE

The cylinders and relief valves listed above all have 1/2" NTP fittings. The Woods parts listed for the 90 and 45 degree elbows in the above diagram, calls for:

6 x 3/4 ORBM 3/4 JICM 90 (mounted to the cylinders)
4 x 3/4 ORBM 3/4 JICM 45 (exit from the relief valves towards to tractor SCVs)

But I don't think that is what I want, is it? I'm thinking that I want these mounted to the cylinders:

Surplus Center - 1/2 NPTM x 3/8 NPTF 90 SWIVEL

Hmm, Surplus doesn't appear to carry 1/2 NPTM x 3/8 NPTF 45 SWIVEL, so maybe I should use NTP to JIC instead:

Surplus Center - JIC 8M x 1/2 NPTM 90 ELBOW

And:

Surplus Center - JIC 8M x 1/2 NPTM 45 ELBOW

Then use the following hoses:

Surplus Center - 3/8" X 30" JIC 8F X JIC 8F 4000 PSI HYD HOSE

Does that look ok? Btw, my tractor has ISO fittings I believe (John Deere 5085M).

Any insight would be appreciated as I'm very new to hydraulics.

Thanks!

The smaller rod diameter will have slightly slower retract time and smaller the rod the more susceptible to bending if end to the blade catches on something. Definitely get the cushion valves to protect the cylinders. If it was mine I would use the existing cylinders then replace if there is aproblem later.

i agree, use what you have and replace later easily if needed.

I'd prolly skip the relief valves too...i've used similar blades on way bigger tractors and they didn't have any relief valves.

But it could prevent you from bending something up.

You are suppose to have the relief valves, just a safety factor. I have a Land Pride RBT45108. I bought it without the cylinders, I don't care for the tie rod cylinders that they come with. I put my own welded cylinders on without any cushion valves. No problems so far, going on 5 years. It's all up to you. If you are going to really work the blade, the hydraulic with the smaller rod has a better chance of getting bent. Use what you have, maybe get some new hoses. If a hydraulic become a problem, get a new one then. One last thing, DO NOT RUN THOSE WATER PIPE FITTINGS.

Just my :2cents:

At minimum get the new hoses. I would get JIC over npt, less leak problems and can be assembled/disassembled multiple times. NPT distort (by design) when tightened and are prone to leak after multiple assembly/disassembly cycles.

Be sure to get npt to JIC adapters for the cylinders too.

If your male quick couplers have SAE straight threads you can use an o-ring from the same thread size ORB fitting on a double male (union) JIC fitting to connect the hose the quick coupler male end. You get these in either straight or 90 degree. Straight even can be had in two different size JICs on the same fitting. Such as 6-8, 8-10, etc.

Thanks guys. I'll get JIC hoses for sure and the relief valves.

Brian, that Land Pride looks almost identical design wise to my Woods. Here's a shot of mine after I removed the hydraulics and pressure washed it:

So if I get hoses with JIC 8F connectors on both ends, would I be correct in assuming I'd need to use the following on all my cylinders (which have 1/2 NTP ports):

https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?item=9-2501-8-8&catname=hydraulic

And these on my relief valves towards the cylinders:

And these on my relief valves towards the tractor:

The only thing I don't seem to be able to locate at Surplus Center are ISO couplers that terminate to JIC 8 male.

I do see these at Tractor Supply:

Pioneer 1/2 in. Connect Under Pressure Tip, 1/2 in. NPTF - 1824156 | Tractor Supply Company

They terminate to 1/2 NTPF, so I could then use these to adapt them to fit my JIC 8F connectors on my hoses:

Surplus Center - JIC 8M x 1/2 NPTM CONNECTOR

Does that look like the best way to connect everything together?

Thanks!

There is no need to use 1/2" (#8 JIC) fittings and hoses. 3/8" (#6 JIC) will handle the flow easily. Look at the hoses & fitings on the cylinders, first picture shows 3/8" hose and I bet the cylinder fittings are 3/8 NPT.

3/8" hose & fittings should cost a little less and be eaier to route.

You would still need some JIC 6MX1/2NPTM to fit the cushion valves and the QC.

The street elbows look to be black iron, rated at 150 psi. If there isn't a psi rating stamped on them, don't use them.

John Deere male coupler part number AR94522 has SAE-8 ORB threads (same as JIC-8 3/4-16 Last time I bought one $10.97

Surplus Center JIC M to SAE M connectors:
9-6400-6-8 $1.15 JIC-6 to SAE-8
9-6400-8-8 $1.39 JIC-8 to SAE-8

Or if you have O-rings already
JIC M to JIC M Unions
9-2403-6-8 $1.15 JIC-6 to JIC-8
9-2403-8-8 $0.95 JIC-8 to JIC-8

Its going on a small JD compact tractor? Don't worry about the cylinder sizes or relief valves, you aren't going to break it. Clean everything up and use it. If you were putting it on a 10,000 lb tractor you might consider the relief valves, maybe.

I've got an 8 ft leon with the offset, tilt, angle, no rv's. They used it on a 130 hp Ford/NH 8630 and it never hurt it.
