Take whatever budget you have for this project, buy a six pack of beer and burn the rest of the cash in the backyard. You will still have a running tractor at the end. You are in way over your head. These 172 diesels don't run hot by nature, in fact Ford used a 2 blade fan to help boost operating temps to optimum levels.

Easy there Rick I am not quite into burning cash as it may sound and I am no Ford tractor pro either. This is my third tractor ( I had a 8n and a 9n) and I am all about learning all I can and this is my first build project. "Over my head" no not that either I am teachable and maybe you can educate me alittle. I am fairly familiar with newer diesels as the majority of my other equipment is diesels which is why I opted for an 861 in the same version. Maybe I was fed some bad info but I was told the 172 cu inch D version ran on the hot side and had issues sometimes with sticking valves due to the heat. Having been told this and looking at the weak little fan I guess you might see my reasoning and need for concern. By what you and others stated as well as others I guess I wont be turboing my tractor any time soon. Although it sounded logical in my head. I see that you own a ford 4000. When I was looking for a bigger tractor I had set my eyes either on an 861 or a 4000. My 861 price was to good to pass up. Can you tell me what I missed out on by choosing the 861 over a 4000?

I know nothing about the motor in your old ford....

But I did add a turbo to my '84 chevy k30 with the factory 6.2L nat aspirated Detroit diesel. Made a world of difference in power and performance. Diesels by their very nature should be turbo charged, in my opinion. I plan to turbo my JD 3005 when the warranty runs out.

Wether or not your motor can handle the extra power, and designing a properly operating system, not to mention sizing the turbo properly, will take some effort. And if it was just a gas motor converted to diesel, the advice to not turbo may be worth heeding.

if anything, they can run too cold if you are not pushing the snot out of them...

valves sticking from heat? yep. you were fed some bad info.

4000? Which one.. there was a 4 cyl 4000 that was essentially an 801 with new tin.. then there was the redesigned 3 cyl models. the 3 cyl 4000 is in a completely different size and work class than the 4 cyl 4000

I believe a 4000 had a 192, i know later 4600's had a 201 diesel..

you really can't compair an 861 to a 4xxx 3 cyl...

if you are looking to get into a 3 cyl. 4000 I suggest a 4600 actually...

I thought all three cylinder gas or diesel engines were 201 cu? (at least of that era, 60's and 70's)

Sorry, that was poorly worded. Isn't all ford 4xxx series tractors diesel or gas from the 60's/70's 3 cyl 201 cu?

4000 series 3 cylinder gas tractors were 192 cu. in until July 19, 1968, more or less. 201 cu.in. after that date. Some tractors before 7/19/68 were equipped with 201 cu. in. gas engines according to what was available at the assembly line. The 201 gas engine shared rods, camshaft and crankshaft with the Diesel, the 192 gas did not.
