Adding a "bumper" winch

The 12k HF is supposed be their top of the line, and that's what I have.

I've also blew a Warn winch, their 8000 model, and the way I did it, was to chain my truck to a tree and pull with the winch until it striped the drum from the keyed shaft it was on. I never smoked the motor on one.

The 12K Warn I have now, has done some amazing pulls, and it to this day still works like new. It's faster than the HF and has never overheated, not even when I drug a fully loaded (with construction lumber) 3/4 ton pu across a couple big swamps.....and back out again.

They are NOT even close to having the same build quality.

They are also not even close to the same price point. can literally buy over 3 HF winches for the price of one Warn, so not sure how its apples to apples. i would hope for 3x+ the cost the warn would be built better.

i have seen enough gear cases destroyed on warn. i really don't care what part of it breaks.

For the price point the HF does more then enough for most people.

They only have 1 line of winches, unless your not talking about the badlands.
Harbor Freight sells two levels of 12,000# winch the Badland ZXR ($350) and the Badland Apex ($550 or $600 depending whether you go with steel or synthetic cable). Speed under full load is similar to the Warn units (3-4 FPM)

i would be shocked if that winch is any different other then the cable line and wireless remote, is there anything else different between the 2?

when i bought mine the zxr was the only one out. still not close to the price of a Warn, which I also own.

Like I said, I'm going by my OWN experience, not what some magazine wrote or second hand info.

I've owned and have been using winches since I bought my first one in the 70's, and I have several right now, so it's not like I'm a newb as this.

Price = build quality, like I said above.

I have offroaded in prolly 30+ states at this point, I am also speaking from my experience. I have used almost every winch made under the sun, and teach off-roading recovery classes. I stand by what I said.

You said it was an apples to apples comparison, it is not. the Warn should be better, my experience says that's barely true. But that is more of dependent on winch ownership, then winch brand.

at the end of the day neither the warn nor the HF are logging winches.
