Just talked to someone getting an mri and was asked if he did autobody or did grinding , he said yes over my life sure,, they said you need to get a xray first, so just a heard up if your booked for one to tell them if you were exposed to metallic filings, so they can get that done first..

More important when doing head or upper body. The magnet will pull particles right through the skin, not a pleasant idea for your eyes. I always tell them I am a metal worker. Most MRI machines have a metal detector built in; just another step. I asked once why don't you do this as a normal procedure as some may not realize they picked up a particle somewhere. No good answer was forthcoming.

Just went the x-ray route. Showed a pencil tip sized piece in my left thumb. Asked doctor when the next step was a MRI. Thumb showed up as black on the MRI. MRI was for middle finger so no damage done. You are in the thing for 40 minutes. Metal never got hot or pulled out. No idea where it came from.

Being in a metalworking field as well, I get asked the same questions. Fortunately, most of my subcutaneous metal is non magnetic stainless steel. No residuals in my eyes.
