a few weeks after i bought my 4310 i bought the shop manual on cd

this was in 2004, recently i had drive controller problems with my 4310 and found the wiring on the tractor didn't match the manual as it seems changes were made not reflected in the manual.

i asked deere for an updated manual for my tractor and it appears that deere has decided i have to buy one

i didn't get what i paid for, i paid for a manual to work on my tractor and that's not what i got.

i'm not a happy camper at this time

I have bought including tractor a total of $34,625.52 from **** and they wont make good on the manual?

Seems I read your rant already in another post? I think this has happened to all of us, I have not found a way around it. Of course, like you, most of us may not need to use the manuals until there is an issue, often past the time the vendor would do anything about it.

it's time we started speaking out

Agree. Often I wonder if they even have a manual that covers the changes made? Does the service dept at your dealer have the correct manual?

they gave me a mountain of print outs very little to do with my problem

i probably know more about it now than they do

it wound up being a bad drive controller another $560

Sometimes service manuals are serial number dependent for the same model tractor. Or, more recently I bought a service manual ($90) which had an addendum ($12) for different serial number ranges. Maybe you just need the addendum.

I had the same problem with the dealership here. They did not want to work on the computer part of the tractor. I attributed it to a poor dealer not John Deere producing a poor product. When you bought your manual you got what you paid for. The most up to date product they had. 6 years later they have updated it.

You are the first drive controller actually being bad on here in all the time I have been a part of the forum. That does nothing for you but it is RARE to have a controller failure. I have had to adjust potentiometer on the throttle and even that is rare (I remember 1 other off the top of my head). Everyone here is willing to help. Some times we are not as fast on the relies as someone with a tractor problem would like. I have been there before myself.

Not sure what is is with JD and manuals. My new 4105 never even came with one. I did finally get it 2 months later. Thank god they had the online version :confused2:

this is about the repair manual which has to be paid for not the operators manual

Gee, being the electrical engineer amongst a conclave of mechanics, I was always the guy that did the electrical troubleshooting. I don't think I ever worked on a vehicle whose wiring actually matched any of the schematics in the manuals. They are always a little different here and there. The looms always evolve over time and vendor changes.

Rant on, if it makes you feel better. Otherwise just trace it out and be done with it.

I work on electronic equipment and not quite exact schematics are more the norm not the exception unfortunately. Even some of those troubleshooting guides in the back pages were written before a product was built. They usually don't represent much beyond rudimentary prototype field testing.

Usually there's a blurb/disclaimer on a front page stating manufacturing deviations may exist.

I have a tendency to pencil in changes that apply to my model - every now and then it saves some time.

tracing a wire is easy but what voltage is the controller looking for coming out of a pot?

that would be nice to know

Years ago I worked for a "major aircraft manufacturer". You could go to the drafting department with a serial number and get any drawing for any aircraft ever built by them. And it was correct. If they can do it, seems like everyone should be able to. I realize people make repairs and modifications after a product leaves the factory, but the company should know what they built!
Just to balance things out, I do like JD's online parts diagrams.

If the paper manual was made for the xx generation and then electronic versions available by serial number, it would solve most of these type of issues.

Bless you Chickenman:drink:
Being an engr. when I first read the rant I was kinda thinking - so what - I work on some really old stuff and also have to meter stuff out but...
I have an early serial number 4610 and my $80 manual wiring diagrams (checked today) are not 100% accurate. :(
Here is my cunning plan...
My local JD dealer has an open door policy and have used it to corner Charlie the local service guru a time or two.
If I need some help with wiring or test point voltages etc.. I'll corner him and hope with my serial number, some tenacity and the JD service computer mother-ship I'll get what I need.
Something about going to the dealer and getting free coffee and Charlies time is rewarding to me.
Hope that the controller and some seat time make you fell better!

i have a mountain of print outs and none cover the wiring on my tractor

It appears it's a problem that doesn't crop up often so they don't know much about it themselves

my tractor has a speed sensor deleted and different pin outs on the computer than shown in the wiring diagrams

when you trace a wire to a black box, where does the signal come out and what is the voltage supposed to be?

Maybe its like the nuns used to tell us in catholic school when we asked theological questions, and they did not know how to answer it so they said.....

"Its a mystery"
