I found a Ford 1200 tractor, 4x4, 3 point, ROPS, and rear wheel weights for $500 on craigslist. The bad, it needs its tranny rebuilt. Would this be a good deal. Is it very expensive to have a tranny rebuilt? My budget is $1800. Comments welcome. This is a 16 hp tractor, would it be able to handle a box blade, grading blade, ect.? Basically my implements listed below. Is 16 hp enough?

Here are some prices on Ford 1200 tranny parts

Ford, 1200, Transmission, WITH ROSS STEERING GEAR, TRANSMISSION CASE, SBA322010520 at Wengers of Myerstown

Not as bad as I expected, pricewise. But I don't know if there are other parts not listed there than you'll need.

Fixing up old tractors into working condition can be pricy. I just had the engine rebuilt on the 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF tractor (27 hp 4-cyl Hercules IXB3SL gas engine) that cost me $1600 ($800 parts, $800 labor). I'll bet you spend all of that $1800 and more getting that old iron running.

That said, $500 for a non-running, fixable tractor is a good price. I paid $1300 for that BF in non-running condition. But it's a fairly rare tractor and the sheet metal is in exceptionally good condition--something you don't find on a lot of tractors that old.

I'd say go for it.

Jake,
I agree with flusher in that fixing up old tractors can be expensive. With Kubota, Kioti and maybe even John Deere doing 0% financing, have you considered buying a new small tractor ? With all the side jobs you do I know you could afford it. Something to consider.

Your 14! Take a shop/auto class and rebuild the tranny for a grade.

I know im 14 but im in a private school this year so there is sadly no shop class of any type. atleast im alowed to run the little lawn tractor to cut the grass there. Any way, I would get a new tractor but im not sure I could earn enough money to pay for a tractor each month. I showed the add to my grandpa who told me to see what it would cost to get the tranny rebuilt at my local NewHolland dealer. If it doesnt cost to much, i would offer the seller $300 for it and haul it to the dealer to get the tranny going. But who knows how much it would cost to get the tranny rebuilt. Thanks for all the advice Think about it, my L118 is lonely.

Well today i found out that it would cost 3-4K to get the tranny working but i found a nice little yanmar 169D for $3250 with 4x4, ROPS, and 3 point. Just need to save my money. Oh and it comes with a 40'' mower.

Tonight, im gonna talk to my mom about it since I really have 2 bank accounts with enough money to get it if I want it. Its got 3 speeds forward/reverse, 540 and 770 pto speeds, front weights, ROPS and seat belt. It is a 19hp tractor with 16hp at the PTO with a 3 cylinder engine and 4wd. Looking at the picture, I want to mount a fire extinguisher and a Quick hitch on the 3 point. Does anyone have this model of tractor that could state any problems they've had with this model tractor. Would this tractor be able to handle a loader? Of coure, i will take pictures for everyone if I get it.
