OK I'll admit this isn't a tractor related thread and to be honest it isn't even one that I did BUT if you think about my TBN handle "4shorts" it means that my last name is "Short" and there are four of us and this thread is about one of the other "4shorts" so I hope you don't mind a proud father posting the work of his son here.

My wife and I have two sons. They are both members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Our oldest son is 30 and in the Army. He spent most of last year in Afghanistan which made 2011 a tough year for me and the wife. His little brother is in the Navy and been on NATO missions and both love the military life.

As fate would have it in the last few years they got posted together in the same town. They actually live 13 houses away from each other which is great. They are both great guitarists and have an extensive collection of guitars.

Last year my youngest son says to me, "Dad I'm thinking about building a guitar". This came as a big surprise to me because I've never known him to build anything plus he didn't have any tools. I tried to inform him that it's a complicated thing to build and maybe he should start off building a bird house or two before he tackled a guitar

Well he was dead set on building this guitar. He said he was studying how its done for a few years and always wanted to do it so he was going to give it a try.

Rather than discourage him I decided to help him gather up the tooling to start the project. Seeing he lives in another Provence now I gathered up the carpentry tools I had and no longer used. I also used every excuse in the book to buy him new tools and send him and after a year or so he had a pretty good selection of basic carpentry tools to work with.

The very first thing he built was a work bench and then he started the guitar build. He put about 8 months into it and I couldn't believe what he turned out. The instrument is actually flawless. The whole time he was building it he was also building one for his brother as well. The guitar is a Les Paul copy. It is not a kit build instrument. It is made out of African mahogany with a pile of custom touches added to it.
He did all the pearl inlay work himself and even the name "SHORT" in the head stock is pearl. He hand crafted the neck and set his own fret's as well.

Here's a few photo's of the build. He did the paint work himself as well. He's brother is a biomedical tech with the Army so he helped him with the electronics. He's working on completing his brothers these days and should have it finished in a month or two. He got such a positive response on this build he's taken orders from friends to build guitars for them and to date got at least 5 to build.

I also attached a video of his brother trying out the guitar. The quality of this guitar is exceptional and I think giving him the tools to build this work of art is one of the best investments I ever made. I hope you enjoy seeing it. Thanks for looking

Impressive. A guitar as a first project? Nothing like jumping in with both feet.:D

A beautiful thing. Shouldn't the neck say "Made in Canada, Eh" ?

Congratulations to the young Builder! There no shortage of talent in your family. By the way, thank the boys for their service and helping keep North America safe. I'm sure you and your wife are very proud of those young men!

Thanks everyone for your comments on my sons work. I'm pretty proud of what he's done with this build. When you see work like this you realize your little boy is really grown up :(
He's really off to a bright future in guitar building by the looks of it. He got the link to the thread so I know he's reading and appreciating your kind words as well.

Simply "WOW"!! I guess that talent is one thing your family in not "Short" on!!
Very impressive even if he had been building them for years!!

Speechless!! That is an outstanding piece of workmanship by him! Gibson or Fender got nothing on him!! I can see your son(s) eventually going into business doing nothing but building custom guitars. Tell him congrat's on the fine job, and thank both of them for their service to country.

Fantastic looking guitar. I really like the color scheme he chose. Certainly something for you both to proud of.

Isn't it a great feeling when your kids surpass you in their skills, especially things you haven't even taught them?! You realize they are really grown up. Not only is the craftsmanship look fine, his playing sounds, to non-musical me, pretty fine, too. What's his next project- an 18th Century mahogany highboy chest of drawers with carved details? You can make the brass pulls for him!

Awesome! A song comes to mind that seems appropriate. "Cats in the Cradle", by Harry Chapin.
