A chain saw doesn't make you a logger!

I always liked the part where one man is holding a rob tied to a tree and either lets it become slack or else it is a monster tree and one man and a rope wouldn't have any affect to the direction of fall. That was a good video for me to watch because I have a bad memory and get complacent at times.

And be sure to wear proper safety equipment...

Seems lots of people believe a tree will go the same direction as the rope. It can really go any angle up to nearly 90 degrees from the rope. The rope only keeps it from going into a semicircle away from the rope direction.

Glad the last tree took down was done by professional. They have all the tools needed and carry insurance for accidents.

I worked very briefly for a local tree service. On a large tree which could go the wrong way there would be one person cutting and two of us holding it with a long pick pole. As long as he read the tree right that worked well; yet I always wondered what would happen that one time that the tree had different ideas.

We were clearing a 13 mile long phone line alongside the road from Greeneville to Kokadjo ME, it hadn't been done for a while and there were multiple trees down on the line. One big tree had the wire down on the ground, so the foreman told me to hold the line so that it wouldn't hit him when the pressure released. I was just a dumb rookie so I obliged. One second I was standing there holding the line as he cut it; the next I was dangling 13 feet of the ground hanging on for dear life, with the foreman screaming at me.

I worked for that company 3 weeks, besides the above incident we also set a pole on a major transmission line on fire, and cleared about 1/2 mile of roadside for a power line to a new subdivision, which turned out to be on private property. (I wondered why the poles were getting set inside the pins.) The day I left the landowner was talking about a significant lawsuit.

Good point. One line of pull may not be enough, pulling or anchored at two directions working together would be better.

If you did a half way decent hinge cutting job that’s not likely. I’ve watched tree guys quite a bit and they’ve always used one line. They all always de limb the trees which makes its path more predictable.

My brother asked me if I would take down a tree right next to his house. I looked it over and said it was too close and he would be better to hire a pro. So he hired a professional tree service to take it down. Using a bucket truck, they topped the tree and had a rope to catch the top as it came down. The rope broke and the top hit the house and stripped off all of the vinyl siding on that wall. Glad he hired a professional! But to their credit, they had a siding crew there the next day to replace his siding.

I would never consider using rope to pull a tree. To much stretch even in the non-stretch type.

It's cable and chain for me. I've got a 60 foot length of 1/2 inch cable with eyes at each end, and 80 plus feet of 1/2 inch chain (4X20)

I don't have any 140 foot tall trees. ;-)
