Tractor
John Deere 990 MFWD and a few others
Just got my new 990 yesterday afternoon. I got to drive it off the semi, checked all fluids and drove it home. Really no time to drive it yet but I did take it for a drive today. Really nice tractor compared to the 4300. Seems like a more solid machine. Can't wait to mow with it!

Congrads on the new tractor, if ya got a digi camera I sure would like to see some pic's of it. When I was shipping for the 790 I herd about the 990 all the time but the only ones I have seen were in the infomation booklets you get at the dealers, never did see one on a dealers lot.

I don't have a digi camera but if youve ever seen a JD 970 or 1070 it is identical to that. It is very similar to your 790 just wider.

I still have to wait till September to get mine. It will be a long 5-6 weeks. I have never seen a 990 on a lot either, 790s you see around though.

Have fun! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think it is doable , once the value of the 990 is understood , what hurts it if anything is when it is stacked up against the 4x-- series is the 1500 lb lift front and rear as to the 2400 lb lift on the 4x-- line ....
Understanding that limit for the money it is a great lil' farm work tractor ..IMHO.

I don't think the lift capacity is that bad but a little more could not hurt. Since the 990 does not come with a right hand handle on the fender I ordered another one and put it on. Its nice to grab on to when driving around. I am also thinking of getting the foam pads like the 970/1070 has to make it as quiet as my dad's 970. On the JD parts catalog I found a mid PTO kit available. Kind of odd since JD does not advertise it at all. I bet if they did more people would buy the 990 so they could get a MMM. Have you other 70 /90 series owners done anything to your tractors?

Yes indeed. You picked a nice tractor. Don't know how carefully you've looked at it, but very little plastic (a bit around the instrument bezel) and even the fuel tank is METAL!!! The electrics are easy to get to - open the hood and look up behind the dash. You can see real wires!!! Might have bought one myself, but I needed a stronger BH & FEL. But as a basic tracor it's a winner. You probably know, the whole thing is a Yanmar. The engine has been around for years-very solid. Nice tractor.

I think it would make a big difference if dealers would ever order them. You see the 790s but not the 990s. When I got a price on both of them I didn't even consider the 790 because it is much less tractor for just a few thousand less.

I talked to one dealer who didn't even know it existed and tried to tell me it wasn't a current tractor (not the guy I ordered from of course).

A MMpto , that news , do you have a part # for that kit ? I am heading over to my dealer this Monday on other business and that would be of intreast ... As to what I have added so for , besides hours on the meter ,,, I mounted my dads old tool box from his Allis Chalmers , I do not know what model it was ,as that and 2 Farmall H's an Oliver crawler and all other equipment from the farm was all sold off back in the early 60's /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.
I now use that tool box as a tool / chain box mounted on steel bar off the floor on the right and the fender . I hope to add lights to the roll bar and maybe make a canopy , but not sure on that .

Hi Bill,

From what I understand you need several kits for the mid PTO option. I would double check with you dealer before you order any of these but here they are:

AM877706
AM877709
AM877707
AM877708
AM878225
AM877586

I would like to hear how this turns out. Since the 990 and the 70 series are the same it makes it kind of nice since all the older attachments should work without any modification like mid mount mowers and snowblowers. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry I forgot one kit:

AM877710

I also looked up the part numbers for the kit for the 970/1070 and they are identical to the 990 kit. Tomarrow I am ordering the foam pads that go on the side shields that were standard on the 970/1070 since they make the tractor a little quieter and I want to make an exact copy of a 970 because I like them so much./forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Good luck with the mid PTO thing tomarrow and what do you plan on using the mid PTO for?

Was looking at the transmission today , I do not see where a mid-mount PTO would come out short or changing to a different transmission , I maybe wrong , I will look closer at her tomorrow .....had her out today and entombed a d*m !@#$%^&*() woodchuck that was eating the pumpkins /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif.....had to take out a 6" cherry tree to do it ,,, the lil 990 pushed it over and it now sits ready to be cut up for fire wood out by the twin oaks in the field .... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
last I saw was the chuck is still under there .... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
