I found this 1996 955 on craigslist and just wanted opinions on this tractor and the price of it. Are these good tractors or would I be better off putting the money towards something newer? Are there any problem area's to look at on these?
If he still has it this weekend I am probably going to go look at it, just wanted to get a little more info before I go.
John Deere 955

Thanks Josh

I traded mine in on my present 4410. It was a good tractor. I used mine pretty hard. I've seen others write here in tbn that this was the most trouble free series of cut's that John Deere ever made. I think his price is a bit on the high side but you are getting a loader and a cab. Plus the hours are low for the year of tractor.

I've never seen a used Curtis Cab for sale. They are $4000 on eBay. A used loader if you can find one is around the $3500 mark. That leaves $7000 for a used bare 955.

I replaced the tachometer on mine because the hour meter wasn't working. I also had to replace a shaft in the trans for the pto but that issue was from it's previous life. I also had to replace the bushing for the hydrostatic input lever shaft on the right hand side. There are six bolts holding the transmission onto the frame under the seat area. Those came loose and I had to tighten them. The outer steering tie rod end was loose too. $300 from John Deere for a whole new cylinder or just run the rod all the way out and weld an automotive end on. I cut the tie rod end off and matched an automotive one up at the local NAPA and welded it on. A bit of paint and all was good. If I could find a low hour bare tractor for sale I would buy it just to have a spare tractor.

I recently purchased a Deere 955 and first the 70a loader will not lift 1900#, maybe 900. Price is way too high, I usually see 955s with loader, deck, in very good condition sold in the 10k range. Yes, hard side cabs for these are very hard to find. Bullet proof, rock solid model tractor though.

not an exact match, but I have had a 950 for 15 years and it has been trouble free. hope my new tractor can do so well.

I bought a 2010 Mahindra 3616 cab, hst with loader and 140 hrs a couple years ago for $15,000.

If you have the time your bound to find one cheaper.

There was a ehydro 4310, turfs, front weights, 600 hours listed at the local Agco dealer for $8000 CAD. I couldn't afford it so I had to let it go but I would have loved to make it mine.
