My Dad has a 1989 955 with a GAZILLION hours on it. 4th hour meter is all we know.

Problem is in the lefthand spindle, at the top. There are two bearings in the upper half. The uppermost holds the front wheel assembly in place, the lower holds the bevel gear for the drive. There is a snap ring that holds the lower bearing from pushing up towards the upper, there is a cavity between with no spacer.

The snap ring, which he claims is intact, pops out, allowing the bearing and associated gear to ride upwards and bind, causing loss of 4wd and occasional wheel lockup. It destroys the gear in the process. He also claims the snap ring groove is intact.

My question, is there a bushing at the bottom of the spindle carrier that could be worn and allow upwards force to push on the bearing and gear assembly?

Has anyone else had this problem? How did they fix it?

Thanks!
