Just wondering if all of the 855's are the same chassis as the 955???

If I remember right, the back half is pretty much the same, front is longer for the bigger engine on the 955

Could go to jdparts to see which frame parts have different part numbers.

What are your plans?

I've been told that the early 855's were built on a shorter chassis... perhaps the same one as the 755. I do not know if this is true or not. I do have an 855 parts tractor (bare from the operators station forward). It's frame is the same as the frame the on my 955. They both use the same hydro transmission and the same transaxle case. The difference is inside the transaxle case... the 955 uses different reduction gearing, different ratio ring and pinion, beefier planetaries in the rear final drives and different (longer) rear axle shafts. Other than that... they appear to be identical.

According to JDParts, AM116602 is the part number used for both the 955 and 855 with serial numbers range XXXXXX - .

There is a note at the bottom that states "USE WITH CENTER MOUNTED FUEL TANK". The fuel tank location is probably the best indicator of the frame size. I believe the switch happened sometime around 1990.

I have went to JD parts and found that the 855 uses 2 different frames. The early ones use the 755 chassis and the later 855 uses the 955's frame.

I have ag tires and found a guy with a 855 & turf tires. Have been talking about swapping tractors. He wants more hp and ag tires and I would like to have turf tires.

While the later 855's used the same frame as the 955... they did use different size rear tires and different front wheels & tires than the 955.

As with all things in life I may be completely wrong on this, but I think the 855 change was only for fitting the larger center mounted fuel tank, and not a chassis size change. I know early 855 owners with the 72 inch MMM. That deck would not fit on the shorter 755 frame. I have seen an early JD studio photo of a model that is 755 size but with an 855 label that could have been an early design thought. As someone with an interest in the x55 tractor history, I would be glad to learn of further sources of information on this.

Just an update

Instead of swapping tractors. My 955 and ag tires for a 855 with turf tires the guy made me an offer for my tractor. He owns it now. Picked it up yesterday.

I did find out that the frames for the 855 and 855 are the same except the mounting bracket for the early 855 fuel tank.
