Tractor
John Deere 950 2wd John Deere 870 MFWD, John Deere F525 mower, John Deere F725 mower, John Deere F510 mower, John Deere Lx172 mower
I'm looking at an 82 JD 950 2wd with 75 Loader and 8a backhoe seller wants $10,000 is this a good price for this machine? I'm really wanting a machine with a loader/backhoe and this machine is close to me so getting it ain't a problem. But I'm a bit leary forking out this kinda dough for a 30 year old machine..

Now I have a 950 project tractor already but to find the loader and backhoe for this machine is Impossible and if I found these I would need all stuff to get it on my tractor aswell which could get expensive real quick

Any time you buy used, there is a degree of risk.
Since you do have a 950, I would think you're somewhat knowledgable about tractors and the 950 specifically.

So, as far as the $10K, I'm sure you can knock a grand or so off the price...just make sure you don't buy another project (unless that's what you want). And definitely give the machine a good lookover and operate all the controls before you buy.

Good luck!

Another thing to be aware of is deere doesn't seam to fully support these anymore. I also have a 950 project tractor I'm working on. Getting some of the critical parts from deere is a no go. Will go hunting for parts soon from the tractor wrecking yards. Looking for gears for the front axle drive, one they have, one they don't. ( will larger Yanmar parts fit ?? )And it sounds like this whole series has the same problem ( 850,950,1050 ) Good bullet proof tractors when running, but look out !! If you already have a 950 tractor, and are buying with the understanding that one will end up being a parts tractor, it could work out well for you. This second tractor if I was buying would be worth the cost of the used backhoe, loader, on a parts tractor. I myself would use the two to put together a good machine with a backhoe and loader. What's left over would be parted out and sold for parts or to a tractor wrecker. And I wouldn't be shy about presenting it that way to the seller. Mine is a 84 with lots of hours, I'll be selling it later this spring, along with a larger yanmar and buying something mid 2000 that still has full support.

I agree it's impossible to find parts and then sellers want over the top prices for stuff.. My 950 is in excellent condition and certainly worth a fresh rebuild and some fresh paint, but right now I don't need a project I need a backhoe and loader on a working tractor..
today I looked at a decent 870 4x4 and liked it, dealer wants 5500.00 for it and has 2000 hours on her. but then I'm right back to looking for a loader and backhoe.

Looking on tractor data that 870 looks to be a 1997

I was looking for a loader and backhoe for my dad's 1050. Couldn't find a hint of one. Ended up buying a Rhino loader and 3-pt backhoe, been quite pleased so far. Do not do a lot with the 3-pt backhoe - but it sure beats a shovel!

I am going to save this thread. I have read many TBN posts that boast of the forever parts support of Deere which justifies the extra cost of their machines. Now this thread seems to indicate Deere's part support may be no better than "third tier" tractors.

It is really good for the Ag tractors and the American made machines. Some of the older Yanmar built machines are getting tougher though.

It's speculation on my part, but the phasing out of parts for these might have more to do with Yanmar than Deere. Yanmar built these John Deere tractors, and in Japan, and they do tractors a little different. A Japanese car will be allowed to run on the road for something like 40,000 miles ( or there abouts in KM ) and have to get a new motor or be scrapped due to smog rules. I'm just guessing here, tractors might be the same deal in Japan, or anything with a motor. Many of the parts for the 850,950, and 1050 interchange with larger tractors like the Yanmar 2500,3000,3110,3220,3810 etc. When they discontinue using these in Japan and Japanese farmers change up to new models, it becomes a looser to continue the parts for a tractor they no longer have in country. At the same time, the interchangeable parts for the U.S. John Deere series becomes a problem as well. In Japan farming has a heavy gov subsidy. Sure the gov is telling them they must buy new tractors every so often, needed or not, for air quality issues like their cars. All of that takes us back here with the JD series. Sooner or later old production parts from Yanmar run out, and they aren't making any more. Thinking that soon our parts support for these will be from a salvage yard VS the JD dealer. It's almost a sure thing that JD also had in the contract for these tractors, something about a time limit on parts support. Unlikely JD would ever talk about this. Hope to be buying a newer tractor with a backhoe this summer. And this aspect of buying is becoming the focal point of my purchase. If it has been outscorced to another country outside the U.S. how long will it be supported. With this country outscorceing products more and more, this is going to become more of a issue with this and other products in years to come. Was considering the New Holland TC35 series, it is about the same size as the two I'm selling. Bet they are going to have the same problem even sooner. Sad to say, don't think anything this size is still made in this country ??

I thought a can of green paint alone was worth six grand??

All joking aside, I had a 950 2wd with a loader myself and it was a good tractor. I sold it for 7800.00. I also NEVER had a problem with parts support.

Good luck
